| [slm] There's been a suggestion to add a DC area forum, but are there enough ppl from DC on here? I was thinking of making the albany forum open only to albany ppl and putting the DC one in it's place..? What does everyone think? |

| sis jannah, ok, um two questions first: 1. why would you want to close it? 2. but you couldn't actually know who all the "albany" people here are, right? if you mean they'd have to register separately to participate, i think you're talking about something that should be taken out of the madina - that's, to me, a horse of a different color.... my comments: 1. it seems there are a few places (malaysia, maybe, for example? not even sure...) that have large enough populations here to have their own little area. there's a good side to this and a bad side - it fosters communication locally for those who don't know each other is even there, but it cuts the madina up into pieces. i'm sure you already know these considerations. for me, i like reading the two local sections -- though i tend to read them AFTER everything else, usually - because it's like a view into a little local world. ok, so i already have an albany area "view", so maybe for me this applies more to the londoners' discussions, but for people from elsewhere in the world chances are they see the albany discussions the way i see the london discussions --- a little social anthropology at work, maybe even.. i hold no strong opinion on this, though...... but i'm pretty sure that if the albany area discussion was closed i would be even less likely than i am now to choose to participate in it. (i don't like closed groups, as you may have kind of gotten from lots of my comments all over the place....) mwihska |

| so no one into a DC forum?? hmm i think in the future people can tick off where they are from and their forum will come up automatically on their own screen, that way it won't crowd up the madina and still be nice to discuss local stuff. in fact we could even implement it now if we wanted.. as for making private the albany forum i think that no one talks in there.. and i'm trying to figure out why... i think that people are hesitant because people all over the world have the potential of reading that stuff.. even i have been hesitant at times in posting certain things there because of that and it's easy enough to know who is from albany and who isn't...most of the time... |

| [slm] and it's easy enough to know who is from albany and who isn't...most of the time... Yesterday I was in Syracuse. There are a couple of sisters on this message board that I enjoy. I saw a Muslimah in the mall and want to to ask her if she knew "Pearl" Then it dawned on me that I did not know her real name. Only her Madina name! Sure... she has told me... but I forgot it- in the moment. So I missed the opportunity! |
