two short articles from dawn this morning. can't say that i know anything about this group. they sound half-reasonable and half-not. does anyone else know anything about them? mwishka ====================================================== India bans Kashmiri women's group NEW DELHI, June 27: India's interior ministry on Thursday banned the radical Kashmiri women's separatist group Dukhtaran-i-Millat, which espouses a strict adherence to Islamic tradition and has urged Muslims to wage holy war. An interior ministry spokesman told newsmen that the Islamic separatist group was branded a "terrorist" outfit by the Indian government under a tough new anti-terrorist law called the Prevention of Terrorism Act (POTA). "A notice has been issued by the home ministry saying the organization is involved in hardcore terrorist activities and banned under POTA," said the spokesman. The spokesman said Dukhtaran-i-Millat's chief Aasiya Andrabi was wanted by the Indian police for illegally transmitting funds to militant groups in Kashmir. "Andrabi is wanted in several cases relating to hawala (illegal foreign exchange) funding of terrorist groups in Kashmir and is absconding," he added. A college graduate with a degree in biochemistry and bacteriology, Andrabi set up her hardline separatist outfit in 1981. The group recently carried out a campaign of throwing coloured dye on Muslim women who ignore orthodox dress codes. Ms Andrabi, 38, is married to a jailed commander, Mohammed Qasim, and has been pressuring him to take more wives given the large number of Kashmiri women who have been widowed by the insurgency.-AFP http://www.dawn.com/2002/06/28/top5.htm FO condemns Indian decision By Our Staff Reporter ISLAMABAD, June 27: Pakistan has condemned India's decision to ban Dukhtaran-i-Millat (Daughters of the Nation), a representative organization of Kashmiri women seeking an end to the Indian occupation of the state of Jammu and Kashmir by peaceful means. Dukhtaran-i-Millat, established in 1981, has been banned under the draconian law the Prevention of Terrorism Act (POTA). A statement issued by the foreign office said: "It is a matter of grave concern for the government of Pakistan that the Indian forces continue their efforts to arrest Ms Aasiya Andrabi, head of the Dukhtaran-i-Millat and other leaders of the freedom movement." The foreign office said Pakistan calls upon the Indian government to respect the fundamental human rights of the Kashmiri people and to put an end to their brutal suppression. India should also immediately release APHC leaders Syed Ali Shah Gilani, Yasin Malik, Abdul Aziz Sheikh, and other Kashmiri political activists, the foreign office said. http://www.dawn.com/2002/06/28/top4.htm |

[slm] I remember this group being mentioned in indian media as the one enforcing dress code for women in universities and elsewhere and punishing the dress code breakers with 'acid' thrown over them. Subhanallah in pakistani media it's 'colored dye' and in india media it's 'acid' . |

[slm] But why would anything be thrown on them at all, even if it was dye? This is not how Muslims are supposed to behave. |

That's right. That is NOT the way of implementing Islam, especially in a non-Muslim country. |
