Seeking references

I have been wanting to post this request for some time, but I haven't wanted to start an antagonistic discussion nor offend anyone, so I have refrained.  But I don't know whom else to ask, so I am going to be "brave".  Mods, if you feel this topic might get out of hand, please feel free to lock the thread, and have people respond to me via IM.

I am interested in reading some of the work of moderate-liberal to liberal Muslim scholars (both men and women).  I have found a couple online, but I don't know where on the scale they would fall.  I would simply like to get an idea of the spectrum of thought within Islam on a variety of issues, so I am not looking for any specific topics or areas, but rather a broad sampling.  So, I would appreciate it if you all could let me know the names and titles of the works of such scholars (even better if they are online!), and where you thing they might fall on the conservative-liberal scale, even if you don't agree with what they might have to say.

And again, I do not want to start a debate.  I am just trying to learn.  Thanks in advance!

Peace,
Dawn

Peace Dawn,

I am not sure as what your interpretation to moderate-liberal is. I believe the definition, though clear in the dictionary or any academics book, it still varies from person to person. E.g, what a person thinks abt modesty might be different from another. But just would like to list some fav authors/thinkers whose ideas I think are moderate-liberal. Must it be just froms scholars (I assume scholars here are people that dedicate their life pursuing knowledge, work in the world of academia? Can it be from politician( I am thinking of my soon to be ex Prime Minister) ,scientist etc etc. There are a bunch of works from Malaysia that have never been publicised outside this country. I think out scholars are alil bit shy, unlike the western scholars.  :). Perhaps Sis UmmWafi can get papers written by scholars in ISTAC be put on a website where everyone can read.I'll just start and let everyone else who read more than I do contribute. I just didn't want to leave your post alone unanswered.

I haven't read his books yet (waiting to get a credit card so I can buy online) but from the interviews with him that I read, it let me have a glimpse of how his ideas and mind work.

To me moderate-liberate does not mean hiding facts because the society might not accept it. More of presenting the truth without being offensive. The authors writing should be appealing to rational minds of the readers. Once we put down the book/writing,  the facts become crystal clear and we gained more insights in the subjects we are reading on but not being offended along the way.

I hope this won't burden your heart and mind more, if there is anything that any of the reader here find offensive in my post, pls inform me and I'll be happy to remove. May Allah forgives me if whatever I post does more harm.

Wassalam.
