ok.. this is sort of a warning to anyone who uses microwave... here's what happen to me a few days ago...  ;D

it was around 2 am in the morning.. I couldn't sleep and my stomach was growling.. soo I went to open my fridge...and lo! there's only eggs in there... hehe hadn't done my grocery shopping... i was pretty hungry so I decided to boil me eggs the 'quick & practical way' using the microwave (at least I thought it's easier hehe)...  put in some water in a container..then chuck in the egg...   :P it was the first time I used the microwave to boil an egg... wasn't sure about the timing...so I set the timer to 5 minutes.... after 5 minutes was up .. I thought, hmm I might as well add another 2 minutes to make sure it's really cooked....  :D
I took the hot egg out...put it on a plate... and I started to peel it...  it was just 1 sec...when the egg went KABOOM! and I just stood there STUNNED!!   Hahaha I was so shocked... then I started to laugh when I realised what happenned... it wasn't a pretty sight.... eggs everywhere.... :'( plus the smell too! but oh well... that was a lesson to be learned... took a couple of days plus lots of air fresherner to get rid of the smell.....

Anyways I went back to bed ..still with my stomach growling... :(

Some say to poke a hole in the egg before you cook it. I would not recommend this.

This is what I do.  Break an egg into a bowl, add about 1 Tablesoon of milk and beat the mixture.

Microwave 45 seconds on high.  of course time varies per wattage of microwave.

haha.. thats hilarious.. and i was tempted to post my own egg story before, but since someone has started the thread i'll share my own.

One morning i fancied making a soft-boiled egg and making strips of toast which you then proceed to dip into the yolk (as you see on TV).

So i boiled it for a few minutes, and cracked it open. But to my dismay, some of the white stuff was still runny, so i popped it into the microwave for a *few seconds* and everything seemed fine...

so i got a nife and started prodding the yoke and it suddenly went *KA-BLAMOW*

hahaha... and my reaction was exactly like yours, first i was shocked thinking what the hell? and then the pieces of yoke started to fall off my face and beard and i realised what had happened. hehe.

hmmm......seems the manuals that come with microwave ovens might be leaving out the detail that maybe people only otherwise encounter in their physics or chemistry class:

the form of energy generated by the ovens (the microwaves) is set at a frequency to vibrate WATER molecules.  and when the vibrational energy (internal to the molecules) reaches a high enough level, all water molecules in the food being subjected to the energy will "agitate" in the aqueous solution - wherever in the food that happens to be.

so, it's like "boiling" ONLY the water in the food.  and if you boil water INSIDE an egg, what will happen?  vapor pressure will increase in any air spaces (steam will build up).  and what will happen if you try to boil a pot of water at high pressure with a tight lid but no venting of excess pressure (a "sealed system" - as in when the vent on a pressure cooker clogs)?  voila!  exploding eggs.  (or food on the ceiling from your pressure cooker.)

(this is the reason you want to cover things only loosely, and the reason why baked goods (or even "main" dishes that might take a while to heat) are best covered with a WETTED paper towel -- providing surface water molecules which can become volatile (change phase from liquid to vapor), leaving the water molecules inside the food, well, inside the food - so it doesn't dry out.....

mwishka (sorry if i made this less fun....... :(........just wanted to help prevent future - or even more serious - accidents.....)

Assalammu'alaikum,

sis Kathy, thanks for the tip! I'm going to try it.

bro Kashif, haha .. our eggs went mad! But Alhamdullilah nothing serious happenned.

sis mwishka, wow thanks for the info! I didn't know a thing about the vibrational energy. Good thing you cleared that up. Abt the wetted paper towel, that's for microwave rite? Do you completely wet the paper towel or just partly?

Jazakallah  :)

sis an,

sorry - i hadn't checked back here.

you can just run the paper towel under the faucet and then just squeeze it out so it's not dripping.

(he hee  my kitchen, some people will recall is, um frying-in-butter-in-cast-iron style cooking. i only use a microwave at the lab, and there we have a handy-dandy clean wash bottle we use in the food area - a squirt bottle meant for laboratory use.  we get the luxury of using this nearly pure double-distilled-deionized water even in our food area....  um i see microwave ovens as sort of expensive appliances used mostly to re-heat leftovers.  maybe because i don't eat meat??)
