Assalamalekum every one, I've been laid off recently and desperately looking for a job related to IT-Field in web development. But no luck yet, Mean time i came across this job of CHP ( california highway patrol police) They are asking me to go for paid training for six months after that if i get hired, i'll be getting benefits plus pension when i retire. ME and my wife are having disputes on me joining this job. She thinks that since ure going to be part of this governmental job, ure supporting this system so its not acceptable in islam, but my point is , i wont be making any descions just patrolling on the free way, so i dont think its haram. Still we are very much confused on this issue. So please any one of you out there, help me out. LEt me know if i'm wrong on taking this job. |

[slm] so, each time a person pays taxes to the US government, is he 'supporting' the system? And whenever some Muslim anywhere around the world buys a Coke/Pepsi, he's 'supporting' the system because the profits fly back to the US. Come on, Bro, don't make religion a burden upon your shoulders. [wlm] Aadam |

as salaamu alaykum, whoa now.. this definitely falls into the "seeking fatwa" category, something none of us here are qualified to do. You might want to look into the fatwa services at IslamOnline.Net, Islam Q & A, etc.. May Allah make things easy for you and guide you to making the best decisions for you and your family. wasalaamu alaykum :) |

i would like some more info why you would think it would be bad to do this (or your wife). It seems that muslims should be in all walks of life if you would want to improve society, or else why would muslims want to come to the USA? |

[slm] I can see why some people would view it as bad to work for the police. Mike you live in the southern california area and I'm sure you are familiar with the injustices committed by the L.A.P.D. So why would someone join that and take part in these injustices? Or maybe policemen are told to go harass any bearded non-white men. That's not fair, so I can see why some people would not want to involve themselves with the police department. I remember once when I was serving on a jury, an old white woman was dismissed because she told the judge she hates the police. I think thats a sentiment a lot of people have these days, that police officers are just thugs, and this has come about because of the injustices they have committed against people. |

[slm] True, Bhaloo, some police officers are thugs. But please let's not generalize. So, no muslim should be an accountant cos some of them are corrupt...no muslim on Wall Street cos some financial analysts are dishonest...no muslim pharmacists cos some of them sell drugs...Let's not fall into this trap of sticking labels. It is by getting into these professions and being hard working and honest that we can change this perception. IMHO there is nothing wrong in being a highway patrol police officer. Being a muslim CHP, and having respectful interactions with your colleagues and the public, will be great is breaking some misconceptions about the profession and your faith at the same time. [slm] Brother, i had read a similar question about joining the US army. now the answer to *that* is pretty much clear. with things the way they are (war on 'terrorsim'), one may easily be put in a difficult situation. but i don't think being on a highway patrol you would be in such a situation. infact by being an upright and honest officer you will only give Muslims a good name. just my two cents...like sis se7en suggested, you should get a fatwa on this one.... wassalam |

Out of mere curiosity, I have a comment that I don't wish for any of you to take offence to. First of all, this is my (woohoo) very first post EVER on this board. So, to introduce myself, I may come across as being decisively rude in the virtual world (and perhaps elsewhere as well), but that is not my intent. To comment, I think we need MORE muslims in the police force. Not only terms of representation, but in order to be able to create a more powerful lobby within the so-called "system." Furthermore, this representation is not limited to the police force, but extends beyond. Yeah, doctors and engineers are great, MashaAllah. But come on! Let's expand our horizons. |
