Beard tips?

Assalaamu alaikum dear brothers
I've started growing the beard since February, without any trimming/shaping/clipping. I
only trim my moustache. I'm impatiently waiting for it to reach a fist's length.
Right now, it's getting really thick and curly. I would like to have my beard smooth,
flowing and straight. I've trieD lots of things, like putting lots of hair conditioner while
taking shower, without much difference. Do you brothers have any advice? Is there any
hadith about how to take care of one's beard?
Jazaak'Allah for your advice.

[slm],
You could try using olive oil that soothes the beard. And use a hair brush which can mange you hair A comb won't do much justice sadly.
Comb your beard every two to three days and after you've done wuzu comb it a little and if possible apply oil again.

Hope it helps

I'm the 'Anonymous' who started this thread.
Mwishka, BroHanif and Siddiqui, thanks for replying.

For the fist's length part, I follow the teachings of Imam Abu-Hanifah, and according to his interpretation, based on the following hadith from Sahih Bukhari, a man's beard must be at least a fist's length long.

Sahih Bukhari, Book 72, Number 780:
Narrated Nafi':
Ibn Umar said, The Prophet  [saw] said, 'Do the opposite of what the pagans do. Keep the beards and cut the moustaches short.' Whenever Ibn 'Umar performed the Hajj or 'Umra, he used to hold his beard with his hand and cut whatever moustaches. Ibn Umar used to cut his moustache so short that the whiteness of his skin (above the upper lip) was visible, and he used to cut (the hair) between his moustaches and his beard.

aal the best with your beard brother, but from what i have  heard the prophet  [saw] took good care of his beard, grow it if you must to a fists length but trim it and shape it so that  you follow the sunnah of the prophet
[saw] and by trimming the sides etc you will be directing the flow downwards to reach a fists length
please pray for me

It has been narrated from Hasan Basri and Atta (Radhiallahu-anhu) that a person may trim only a little from the length and width of the beard. Tabri has proven this view of his from a narration in Tirmidhi Sharif in which it is stated the Nabi (Sallallahu alayhi wasallam) used to trim a little from the length and breadth of his beard [Vol.2 pg.105].

Hadith - Muwatta 51.7
Yahya related to me from Malik from Zayd ibn Aslam that Ata ibn Yasar told him that the Messenger of Allah was in the mosque when a man came in with dishevelled hair and beard. The Messenger of Allahmotioned with his
hand that he should be sent out to groom his hair and beard. The man did so and then returned. The Messenger of Allah said, "Isn't this better than that one of you should come with his head dishevelled, as if he were a shaytan

Could you please provide us with the mentioned hadith from Tirmidhi Sharif?

Also, here's the definition of the word 'groom' from Merriam-Webster online:
Main Entry: 2groom
Date: 1809
transitive senses
1 : to clean and condition (as a horse or dog)
2 : to make neat or attractive <an impeccably groomed woman>
3 : to get into readiness for a specific objective : PREPARE <was being groomed as a presidential candidate>
intransitive senses : to groom oneself

from my refrence material this part of the hadith has been quoted

'Umar ibn Harun, from Usama ibn Zayd, from 'Amr ibn Shu'ayb, from his father, from his grandfather, that the Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace) "used to trim from his beard, from its sides and its length"

Since I do not have the tirmidhi shariff with me as of now I cannot fully quote it ,having provided you the number and the vol and in the hope
that you have better resoucers than me as of now I would appreciate if you could please look it up and let us know

I also came across this
Imam Baghawi says: "'Leaving the beard be' means 'making it ample' (tawfiruha) . . . . It is related from Ibn 'Umar that he used to grasp his beard with his whole hand, then remove what was in excess of that. This was also related from Abu Hurayra. Ibrahim [al-Nakha'i, d. 108/726] said, 'They [the Sahaba] used to trim their beards on the sides'" (Sharh al-sunna, 12.1089).

please pray for me

Well i keep my beard pretty low.  If not I'd be rocking dread locks under my chin.  But that goes back to differentce in hair types.  Do what you can brothers, is the goal masculinity, modesty, and compliance, or is ita fist length?  I just don't want anybody up late at night cursing themselves in the mirror "Look at you, you call yourself a man, what kinda beard is that!!!!"
