Amina wadud!!!

ASalamu Alykum,

I was recently talking to someone about gender equality in Islam and was telling them
about Dr. Jamal Badawi. So the person i was talking to was also muslim and said that how
Quran has been interpreted by males and how females like Amina wadud are stepping up and
giving their own interpretations. I have heard about amina but in a negative context
before, inshaAllah i will look at her books. But meanwhile i was wondering if anyone has read
her stuff and would comment on her books.

I have read her book, "Quran and Women". Personally i haven't found anything negative in the book. In fact she has done a remarkable job in explaining that the Quran does not indulge in gender discourse, and the purpose of the Quran is not to judge people on the basis of gender but only piety or taqwa. I think her book is a symbol of the struggle of Muslim women to differentiate between culture and islam, and quite often it can attract negative crticism from the saviours of cultural islam. Though i also disagree with some of the points, nevertheless the book is a good contribution in the ongoing debate for gender equity in islam.

But we have to remember that other than the Quran , every book has to be taken with a grain of salt. As once a shaykh was asked, which book will he keep if he has to go to the desert all alone, and he said, "Jalalayeen" (which is a book of tafseer), People asked him, doesn't that book have errors? The shaykh replied, Allah has purposely put errors in every other book than the Quran to maintain its sanctity.!!

I have both read her books and attended her lectures. She is a powerful speaker and very knowledgeable in both Qur'an and tafsir. I am a bit biased (just a little!  :-[ ) as she was one of my first teachers after I accepted Islam.

I agree with Ahmer. Qur'an and Woman is a good contribution. I believe it  adds to scholarly literature by modern Muslim women.
Allah knows best.
