dear sisters,
if your fiancee were to greet you with "hey baby!" in the early part of your engagement,
would your reaction be:

a) slap him/hang up/delete him off your contact list

b) ignore it, greet him with salaams and then point out the offensivity of the remark

or

c) jilt him on the spot?

I have learned that the term engagement means different things in different cultures.

If you are refering to the man i am going to marry soon.... I would think it was endearing.

unless it was an austin powers type "hey Baby" ... then I would just shake my head and walk away....

What is jilt?

Wa'alaikumussalam warahmatullah,

If I'm engaged and is gonna marry this brother, and he says.. "Hey baby!" (note the exclamation marks! or without it...)

I'd ignore, say salam, say whatever I wanna say and walk off.

I'd probably hide my surprise.. but people say, my face is like an open book.. so I guess, I'd look shocked  :o, with a frown on my face.

So.. message sent across = STOP IT, BUSTER!

unless.. he still doesn't get the message (I've read men can't detect and translate facial expressions as good as women)... so, if he does it another time... I'd give him "the Look".

If he still doesn't get it... then... I'll tell him, to stop calling me that and I'm not comfortable if someone other than my husband calls me such terms of endearment.

And if he still does continue doing that... then, we've got some serious issues that needs to be addressed.

Allahua'lam
Wassalam :-)

sis kathy,

i think "jilt him" here is being used to mean "dump him".

(it would usually mean either to back out of an engagement to someone for the purpose of becoming engaged to someone else, or more casually, to stop seeing someone specifically to enable one to start seeing someone else.)
