this is a fwdl i recieved and subhan Allah, what a reminder

WORLD CUP FACTS

Economic Impact

- France spent approximately 9.4 billion francs in
organising the tournament.
- South Africa?s endervours in the World Cup costs R10
million. (Imagine the number of starving people that could
have been fed with this money).

Political Disruption

- Political discussion in Nigeria were rescheduled to
avoid a clash with Nigeria?s World Cup fixture against
Spain.

Community Problems

- Impoverished districts of Bangladesh had 4 nights of
blackouts due to a surge in power consumption, due to 4
nights of live World Cup soccer telecasts.

Social Violence

- A man was shot dead in Port Elizabeth after he
apparently made a derogatory comment following the Saudia
Arabia - South Africa match.
- More than 50 people were injured and 8- arrested in
clashes surrounding the England - Tunisia game played on
15 June.
- After the opening ceremony festivities, sporadic
fighting left 34 police injured and 30 people were taken
into custody.
- Before the England - Colombia match, at least 30 English
fans were arrested in clashes with riot police.
- A policeman was left comatosed after being severely
beaten by hooligans.
- Five people were injured and 60 arrested as fans clashed
with police after the Mexico - Germany match.

Marital Problems

- The World Cup was responsible for causing a significant
number of domestic fights, divorces and wife batterings. A
survey was conducted to see what women would do while
their husbands were captured by the soccer craze. About
21% of them would prefer to go and see male strippers,
while 6% would try to renew an old relationship. (The
Star, 12/6/98)
- A woman complained to police that she had been beaten up
by her husband after an argument over which match they
would watch on television.

Health Hazard

- In Egypt, the sole tobacco manufacturer recorded an
increase in tobacco sales. Since the beginning of the
World Cup, 55 million more cigarettes were being delivered
on the market per day. Apparently, this increased
consumption was due to troubled soccer fans who needed to
calm their nerves.
- After Scotland lost 3-0 to Morocco, about 8000 Scottish
fans drank about 125 000 liters of beer. Bars ran out of
beer and new supplies had to be shipped in.

Work Disruptions

- Reports indicated that millions of people chose to leave
work for about 1 to 2 hours daily in order to watch the
soccer. At times, people watched soccer till late at night
and were tired at work the next day.
- Some businesses even set up huge television screens to
allow the employees to watch while working.

Al-Jamiat Comment

The above statistics reveal various harms of the world
cup. However, these harms and losses are totally
insignificant in comparison to the loss suffered by
missing one Salaat due to the World Cup or due to
indulgence in sport in general.

Rasulullah (Sallallaahu Alayhi Wasallam) is reported to
have said, ?The one who misses one Salaat, it is as if all
his family and wealth have been lost.? Is there anyone to
take stock and count the losses? Further, multiply
hundreds of thousands of Muslims having missed several
Salaats merely because they were glued to watching a ball
being kicked around. Is there anybody to say "Enough is
Enough"

May Allah Ta?ala open our eyes.
