Salam,

I hope you are all well insha-Allah. It's been a while..^_^

On the old board I asked if anyone had seen The Lion of Ayn Jalut ...Well I ended up buying it for my little bro and when I sat down to watch it with him I was disappointed. Perhaps I just had high expectations and was hoping it would be more historically accurate. The film, I believe is based on an historical fiction-novel by Ali Ahmad Ba Kathir called Wa Islamah (some info about the novel and author here: http://members.aol.com/ChrSzyska/bakatir.htm)..

In the film and book Qutuz is the nephew of Jalaludin Khwarizm-Shah. It's basically about how Qutuz and his cousin Jihad (Julanar)(who is Jalaludin's daughter in the film and novel) are captured and sold to slavery from one owner to another. I'm pretty sure most of Qutuz'a life as potrayed in the film is fiction. . In reality his early life is probably obscure like most Mamlukes.. But I could be wrong....I need to do more research

I don't mind it being a historical fiction but they could have at least made it interesting..the story I felt was lacking... character development as well was lacking....but I concede there is only so much one can do in a one hour cartoon..

I didn't like a few other little things in this film..like the way they portrayed the Mongols....as an ugly yellow race...personally I feel we should move beyond these stereotypes.

The voice acting in the English dub is awful..sometimes irratating..(ex Allah is pronounced Ayllah, Muslim as Mozlem..and  there were a few others.. you get my point)..

The animation quality although not bad is inferior compared to what the kids watch on t.v.. but I admit I don't know what thier budget was..

Having said that the film does have it's good points...for example they did make an effort to insert a strong woman character..and there were a few other good things..

So I am not saying don't bother watching it...I think it's still beneficial in some ways. Just get a few opinions about it or borrow it if you can before you buy. My bro, I admit, wasn't that critical when he watched it.. He though it was okay..

My rating out of 10: I would give the film a 6 (I am being generous here)

my two cents..

If anyone else has seen the film, I would like to hear your opinion.
