why do you look away

Oh what do you see in me?
Wearing the hijab

is it the colour of my skin?
is it what race i am?
is it my 'out-of-fashion' clothes?

Oh brother
You with your western suit
why do you not bother to say salam

Why do you look away
just because i am your sister in islam?
just because i wear what God has asked me to wear?

oh Sister
i saw you
with your little son
you saw me
but why do you not say salam?

why do you look away
why do you not say anything
aren't we sisters in islam?
aren't we one blood in islam

why do you look away
why do you feel ashamed

love me as I love you
we are sisters.. we are brothers
please do not forget that we aim to please Allah
the Exalted.. the Most Merciful

Would you not agree that we need to work on our sisterhood and brotherhood?
would you not agree that Prophet Muhammad  [saw] told us to unite .. so we'll be strong?

Please be proud ..be proud that you are a Muslim
For you are the Ummah that Allah has given His blessings and approval to

Sister An, do you think that muslim men should say salam to you each time they see you? Even strangers?

Mashallah
this is very beautifully written poem - and Bro,  Salaam in Islam is not limited to one who we know,  its for Whole Ummah.  Sister or brother, whether you know that person or not - so if you pass by a Muslim brother or sister you have to say Salaam - whether you get a reply or not . You have to seek peace and blessings for your brother and sisters in Islam
