Salam all!

I need help! I study politics and am considering topics for my dissertation at the
moment. I want to focus on something that sheds light on the suffering of the muslim ummah -
somewhere like Israel or Afghanistan, but need ideas on what specific areas i can focus in
on because as with all dissertations, you need a research question. i want to do
something about recent events but need ideas!!
any help welcome!

salam alaikum,

*"I want to focus on something that sheds light on the suffering of the muslim ummah -  somewhere like Israel or Afghanistan"*

you mean Palestine or Afghanistan ;)  Maybe you can focus on the Palestinian uprising.

I am currently asissting a good friend with her PhD in religion. Her work is a comparative examination of a particular verse in Qur'an.

What about a comparative examination of political systems? Palestine before and after the occupation. Or Afghanistan before and after. Another fascinating history is the Muslims in the Philippines (I believe) - now branded terrorists by "Dubya" who were living under Sharia if I am correct before the modern problems started. I too would be interested in knowing more.
InshaAllah you will receive guidance.

What about the political allegiance of Muslims? In USA, UK, France
Democratic ISlam?
Potential use of nuclear weapons by muslim states (Pakistan)...permissible?
Political leadership in Palestine...after Arafat
The Philipino terrorists...thugs with muslim names or muslim freedom fighters?

there are so many possibilities...

Salams,

My advisor specialises his interests in the Middle East too, but he has suggested doing the history of Israel with UK and France over 1940 onwards. Although this idea deals with the area I am interested in, I would much prefer to focus on something more recent - such as since the Intifada. The problem with this however is that there isn't much research done on recent problems so I would have not much information to go on for my research. I was also considering Afghanistan at one point but am having a complete mental block at the moment and need to really sort this out within the next day or two!!!!  Brother siddiqi, thanks for the help but the person is based in New York whereas i am in the UK! Do you know him personally and would he be ok with me emailing him?

jazakallah

I donot know him personally , but some one I know (my prof) is intiating contatc with him for a history on" Islamic fundemantalisim"
I still think its worth a try emailing him
and  btw your advisor has chosen a nice topic for it was the brits in 1940's
who  ratified the division of Palestine (remember ex prezz Yiztak shamir tried bowing up brit troops/diplomatic mission and was hence decalred an international terrorist) and French have had a traditonal love hate relation ship with them

I may be grossly mistaken, but I believe there's tons of information out there, a few months ago my univ bookstore was chockful of books on the current situation of Palestine..and Israel.

Its always best to go with what you know, i.e. what you feel most comfortable with. There's alot of information out there on Afghanistan, not as much as on Palestine, but there's alot. I'd say look at stuff published prior to sept.11, as after that date, due to the American campaign against 'Al Qaida'  'in' Afghanistan there was alot of material published with a strong propaganda type leanings.

ps. Perhaps your professors right - history is pretty fascinating, sure most of its in musty, dust covered books. But its rich and fascinating - especially if you can find an learned elderly person who can talk to you/tell you stories.

as salaamu alaykum,

I know Dr. Barbir personally.  He's a cool guy, Princeton graduate, author, *extremely* well versed in Ottoman and Middle East history.  I think he'd be an excellent resource, if you're looking to write something related to the subjects he specializes in.

Let me know if you have any other questions pertaining to him..

wasalaamu alaykum :)

How about the american muslim community as a research topic?

For instance what happened to early muslim communities in the us?
Do they have any surviving descendents still living in the us? how
do they perceive themselves?
