Welcome to the board sister.  By wearing a swimsuit, you would be exposing your awrah (what needs to be covered) to others and this isn't permitted.

A description of what a woman's aurah is, can be found here in fiqh us sunnah.  As an alternate you might want to see if there are private pools in your area where only women go (and again the proper attire would have to be observed by all participants), or maybe you could organize a private session at a pool (maybe the YMCA?) with some of the other Muslim sisters in your community, or even some hotel rooms have hottubs within the rooms.

Fiqh-us-Sunnah
Fiqh 1.113
Woman's aurah & hijab
There is no such dispute over what constitutes a woman's 'aurah. It is stated that her entire body is 'aurah and must be covered, except her hands and face. Says Allah in the Qur'an, "And to display of their adornment only that which is apparent (do not expose any adornment or beauty save the hands and face)." It has been authentically related from Ibn 'Abbas, Ibn 'Umar and 'Aishah that the Prophet said, "Allah does not accept the prayer of an adult woman unless she is wearing a headcovering (khimar, hijab)." This is related by "the five," except for an-Nasa'i, and by Ibn Khuzaimah and al-Hakim. At-Tirmidhi grades it as hassan.
It is related from Umm Salamah that she asked the Prophet, "Can a woman pray in a long shirt (like a night shirt) and headcovering without a loincloth?" He said, "If the shirt is long and flowing and covers the top of her feet." This is related by Abu Dawud. The scholars say it is sahih in mauqoof form (as a statement of Umm Salamah and not that of the Prophet.)
It is also related that 'Aishah was asked, "In how many garments is a woman to pray?" She answered, "Ask 'Ali ibn Abu Talib and then return to me and tell me what he said." 'Ali's answer was, "In a headcover and a long flowing shirt." This was told to 'Aishah and she said, "He has told the truth."
The clothes worn must cover the 'aurah, even if they are tight enough to highlight those features. If the clothes are so thin that one's skin color can be seen, they are not suitable for prayer.

The awrah in front of other women is:

From islam-qa.com

The correct view is that a woman may uncover what is above the navel and what is below the knees in front of another woman, whether she is a Muslim or a kaafir. As for the area between the navel and the knees, this is ‘awrah and is to be covered in front of everyone.

I used to go swimming with Ali in an outfit that I made. Kind of like a scuba suit (in material) with a light weight cotton over cover.

What a pain. Yet it worked because the under layer would cling and as I was emerging from the water I could pull loose the outer cover so it would not cling.

Sure it harder to swim... but not so bad.

Sure a woman can swim, sunbathe, etc... especially if she is alone... but my momma always said I had to have a buddy with me! ;)

Insha Allah, it would be a dream come true for me to go on vacation to such a spot!

in our apartment complex, mashaAllah there are tons of Muslims as well as non-Muslims.  The Muslim women here go into the pool with full clothing on, hijab and all.  Once you are in the water, the water distorts things so the shape of your body can't be seen from within the water or without.  Like Kathy said, wear some loose clothing on top (some women wear a jilbab?) and just exercise care when stepping out of the pool to make sure your clothes aren't clinging to your body.
Of course it would be extrememly hard to do serious, lap swimming dressed like that.  What a sister i know used to do was wear a full leotard like a Danskin one, and then wear a long nightshirt on top, a swimming cap for her hair...and then swim at night or early in the morning.  This way she could do laps.

I am new to this site so please forgive me for jumping straight in here!
Some of the sisters in our community swim regularly, they rent some time at the local pool and they have a female lifeguard but I wonder if anyone considers the fact that most pools have security cameras!!!!!
Swimming is a luxury not a neccessity and I feel we would be much safer all round just not bothering.
Your awrah is a precious thing and swimming in public places where there is a chance however remote that you may be seen, is simply not acceptable.
Our local paper recently reported that people had been cutting out peepholes in changing room doors and had been spying on unsuspecting bathers!!!!!!!!!!!!!
astaghfirullah!!
hope I haven't been too harsh

Is this the evidence one would provide for saying that women should cover their feet too? I'm not sure what the opinion is of wearing sandals in the summertime. Does anyone know? I know we've had discussions on this before, but I don't know if we reached any conclusions.

My daughter (a Christian Minister)  learned that I had converted t o ISLAM.
She called me with every negativitiy imagianable about ISLAm, none of it stayed witn me.  Because she is my daughter, I allowed her to vent her views and when she finished I asked here:  How much do you know about ISLAM?  Her reply which I suspected was.  I know a little.
She went on about how I was going to HELL, and a whole lot more.    I had not had a conversation with her in over two years and she called me just for this and not to see how I was doing.  Now it has become gossip in my opinion.  She is calling and telling the others family membes I am MUSLIM.  My aunt asked one of my daughters.  What is wrong with that?

The other daughter (Christian) visited me with my granddaughter. My granddaughter asked all kinds of questions about ISLAM and I was pleased to know she wants to know.  She loves to read and has claimed that she does not feel she will learn about HISTORY in the schools.  She is 10 years old and as I said an avid reader.  Every attempt I made to answer her questions about ISLAM, my other daughter interrupted by saying:  She does not need to know about ISLAM.  She would not allow me to give the child literature/books about ISLAM to read.  Explaining to the child about the way I dress was too much for my daughter also.  This truly hurts to know that here I am a grandmother who have a vast amount of knowledge of the world and more knowledge of ISLAM than they do.  The CHILD WAS ASKING HISTORY QUESTIONS.  ALL that is happening in the world today is HISTORY.  THIS is what she will need to know as she continues her education.  This is her HISTORY and yet my daughter refuses to allow me to give her the material and the answeres she asked.  This is truly sad and they call themselves Chrsitians.  They will not allow me to see the grandchildren.  I know this is in the area of UNLEARNED and I must remain STEALTH so that they can one day their consience level is raised.

Is there a reference I can go in the Quran about parents who PROVOKE/deny children the right to learn.  I can easily find it in the American Bible and the scriptures in the American Bible says:  DO NOT PROVOKE THE CHILDREN (keep them from knowledge, understanding, wisdom, etc).

Both daughters are keeping the children from one of the most important teachers in their lives (ME).

Shukran

wow some random topics up in here... i believe hanafis allow the uncovering of feet. as for traditions about seeking knowledge and teaching others there are many in islam. i think the best thing would be to let your children/grandchildren learn from your example and try to explain or drop a little bit of islam here and there in your conversations and practice, instead of trying to explain/push the whole thing on them all at once..

Not to sound paranoid... just saw Beautiful Mind.... keep in mind sky sattelite photos....
Both daughters are keeping the children from one of the most important teachers in their lives (ME).
Same thing happened to me. My sister and her husband took me out of their will - to raise their children if  they died. They even kept them away for awhile. It all changed tho, once they learned more- or got over the shock...

Especially if your daughter is a minister... she should see the beauty of tauheed and or respect for Jesus pbuh.  For the time being (I agree with jannah)... just babysteps...  Also keep in mind that the children do not necessarily hold the parent's view points. They may love their grandmother.. but are afraid to show it. So you have plated the seeds in the 10 year old.... some seeds are like bulbs...years and years they are developing- unseen... then when the time is right they spring into bloom....

In the first couple of years when I would send them Eid presents I would type up a story about Ibrahim aas and Ishamael aas- and tell them the story.  However I would use names familiar to them- Abraham aas and keep dawah in mind and knowing that the parents would read it before giving them the story. At the same time the parents would be learning.

It helped alot and in less than a couple years everything was back to normal, Al-Humdullillah.

Bismillah and salam,

I have also heard of rich non-muslim friend having an indoor swimming pool and when they leave on vacation, the muslim woman who was their friend asked if we they ladies can go once every a couple of weeks. This happened apparently a few summers in a row which was nice. Before I moved here though.

With regards to the feet, the prophet saws said the hijab should cover all but, and then pointed physically, to the face (only face, no neck or ears showing) and then the palms.  Some scholars say if you are praying with mahrams then you don't have to cover the feet. or if with women, but otherwise you should. All say you should cover except for one math-hab i think.

I just wanted to give advice to the grandma, let them do whatever they want(daughters) but if you show the grandchilder a good islamic character of what a muslim grandma should be, the kids would love you no matter what.

Assalamu Alaikum,
I hope everyone is well. I just recently started wearing socks to complete my hijaab.
After having read the chain on  Swimming suits and swimming, it seems that one can actually pray with feet uncovered when in the company of women or with Mahrems. Please clarify.

Also, is there anyone who can clarify whether or not colored fabric is permissible to wear for women? By coloured, I mean light colours like pastels not necessarily bright like red or fuchia.

As far as I know there is no limits on the colors a woman can wear. How ever I was once privledged to a discussion about this and some valid points were made in regard to the colors of a woman's outer layer hijab (I am using the term hijab as a veil over the body, not just a scarf).

Some of those speaking made an interesting comment about wearing clothes that are flashy or attention getting. That perhaps this would not be a good idea to wear if you are trying not to get undue attention.

I have noticed that the colors one wears has different meanings in different cultures. For example red in one culture is often a "wedding" color- while it is unheard of in mine.

I remember one brother telling me that a pastel apricot/peach outfit I was wearing had a negative conotation in his culture. So while it was not bright or flashy.. apoarently it was deemed inappropiate.

Since this board is filled with many cultures... Tell us what colors are acceptable in what occasions... and which ones are not!
