I've got a question for the hijabis out there, how do you get your hair together under that scarf? Any tips/tricks? What about those of you who have long/thick/heavy hair, how do you avoid those awful headaches caused by putting up your hair? Myself, for about the last four years i've done a french braid where I take the end and fold/tuck it underneath the hollow space that forms once you french braid your hair and secure it with a hairband, but lately the weight of my hair has been giving me severe headaches, and I really dont want to cut my hair (its not too long-halfway down my back, but thick-Alhamdulillah this is anonymous;) ) any suggestions/ideas would be greatly appreciated. sis anonymous, it's not necessarily the weight of your hair that's giving you headaches, it may just be how tightly you pull it when you secure it. some women with even light hair will get such headaches when their hair is pulled tight, and some women with heavy hair never do. i suggest that you try one or both of these strategies: if the headaches are because your hair is pulled too tightly at the scalp, this will help. when you braid your hair, instead of just starting by dividing it, start by putting it in an elastic, pulled as tightly to your head as you like, then push the elastic backwards, a little away from your scalp, so there's a "pouf", so that your hair is not pulled tightly at the scalp. then braid it as you would otherwise. if you need to braid your hair more nicely and smoothly for some reason, and want the rest of your hair not to pouf, just putting on the elastic band before you braid it will give you a small degree of relief from the braid pulling too tightly. or if you really don't want to use an elastic band, just be sure that the braid itself is loose and not snug against your scalp. if the weight of your hair is giving you headaches, this will help. i'd still suggest pushing the band away from your scalp, but i'd also suggest securing the bottom end of the braid to your head, so that it loops, and the weight is more evenly distributed, and your hair again does not pull directly on your scalp. hope these will help you get rid of those nasty headaches. mwishka |

Asalamu Alaikum, I feel ya sis, i know exactly what you're going through and the solution allhumdulilah is quite easy, at many Islamic stores where they sell hijjabs and jilbabs they sell head bands, these arnt ordinary headbands, they're quit long, they almost go to the back of your head, they are soooo comfortable, i fell in love with them. So u can tie your hair ANY way you want and this specially designed headband wont let any of it show! :-) :-* |

well i once heard that you shouldn't put your hair into a style that will be poking out of your hujab because then people know how your hair is like and what is the style its in. so try doing a loose braid and tuck it under your jilbab or your shirt. if you got straight thick hair put it in a low pony tail or bun. [quote]have you tried putting your hair in a bun that is low towards your neck? [/quote] this is a good idea, sister fatimah, but her hair is a bit thick so it may hurt her a bit. this is also maybe your problem that you style it too tight: [quote]it's not necessarily the weight of your hair that's giving you headaches, it may just be how tightly you pull it when you secure it. some women with even light hair will get such headaches when their hair is pulled tight, and some women with heavy hair never do. [/quote] but what i think is that you braid your hair and put on a hijab cap with a loose elasticity. it will help you to relieve the pain and some times cotton hijabs break your hair and damage it so protects the hair from damage... the caps are usually made from nylon or polyester closed up lace so if you where a light hijab you hair wont be visible. god luck...salam |

I found the best thing at Wal-mart it's a terrycloth headband maybe 3" wide and has Velcro on the ends. It's long enough to around your forehead & keep that hair back & then I fasten it under the rest of my hair at the back of my neck. Since it's terrycloth it's seems to help with the problem of the hijab slipping it sort of grips it. :-) The rest of my hair I don't even tie I just put my jilbab or abaya right over it. |

Dear Barraa, If you have a Wal-mart in your area, probably K-mart would have something like it too. You find it in the hair aisle with all the brushes & combs. It's not a cap it's a terrycloth headband, the kind you see people wearing to keep the bangs off your forehead & the hair back from your face. You can usually buy them in packs of 3 assorted colors. Hope this helps you! |

[slm] If your hair is quite long, you could also try a French braid, then tuck the end back up underneath it, and pin it in place. [wlm] |

Sister Leslie, maybe for fine/thin hair a french braid may work but it always pokes out the top of your hijab in medium/thick hair you see so i don't really suggest that, maybe a french herringbone because it lies on your head flat if its done correctly. |

[slm] If the Sister's hair is heavy and long and giving her headaches. It is surely permissible to cut it or thin it. Just remember to leave enough to get three braids out of it. |

[slm] long hair is difficult to keep under a hijab. but maybe a loose bun is the answer. i've discovered a great way to do a bun but it really needs to be seen rather than described to understand how to do it. but all buns eventually fall out after an hour or so. anyone know how to keep a bun secure? where do u stick all those hair pins? i need help too cos my hair is forever poking out me hijab. :( :-) Nafisa |

[slm] A good method is to put your hair in a pony tail and then wrap the hair around the ponytail holder. If you take a stretchy head band and wrap it around the bun a couple of times the bun will not fall out. It will be secure for the rest of the day, plus you don't have to worry about all those pins. I know that this will last 8 hours or more when done in this way. :-/ [wlm] :-) Ayla_A :-) |
