Mission #3: Dare

Asalaamu Alaikum Madina Citizen ;-)

Your mission this week, should you choose to accept it, is the following:

Go to your TV set.

Locate the off switch.

Keep it turned off for 5 consecutive days.

As always, should you, or any member of the Madina fail in your mission, the Madina will disavow all knowledge of your actions.

This post will self-destruct in five seconds. (or be moved to the ARK soon)

yay.. alhamdulillah..I'm the Agent of the Week  ;D JazakAllah khair.

Hmmm..mission #3 seems kinda hard to accomplish..ya see, there's about 7 people in my family and someone or other will always walk into the room and switch on the T.V. Hmmm...If I see the T.V switched on, should I just turn it off and walk out? Will that count..?
JazakAllah khair.

We wouldn’t want to be the source of any domestic strife!!!!

I would say try and avoid being around the TV and if someone else has it on, then try and go somewhere else.

If Agents can’t manage five consecutive days, it will be still be nice to know how many days they managed and how hard/easy they found the mission and what other stuff they got up to instead of being in front of the box.

For added info, we’re keeping the Mission open for 2 weeks to help you guys.

um brother khalid, did you notice we lost all the brothers??  what's going on with that??  can they get back in?  or are they out for good??

um maybe i should opt out of this one, because i've been rarely watching TV for a while now.  kind of since jenin...  i think maybe it've had it on two or three times in three or four weeks (hee heee there are still star treks to be found..), but, if something isn't a challenge, can you say you succeeded at the mission?

or, maybe i'm getting ahead of myself here - maybe i should wait and see....i might find myself wanting to watch something.  ok, i think i spoke up prematurely.  i'll just see what happens....

pssssstt.......sis kathy!!  radio and newspapers.  and even magazines.  and they're all - even radio - much quieter and more calming than TV.  or even internet news - you could get your TV news that way.  maybe you could try to use these "alternate news sources" for five days.  then you could still stay in the game!

and, um, re:  akhwat.  ya, i know.

Just wanted to ask is this mission stated in a correct form.

Because "watching TV" isn't bad, but watching nonsense is the bad thing here. I think Kathy has made a good point we surely have or want to watch the news on TV. So TV isn't the EVIL thing here, but the evil we want to prevent is the evil inside ourselves.

But do have to admit if u strive for self-development and prosperity than such a mission is a good start. Am saying this from experience...  ;)  So choose to accept the mission. :)

Suggestion why don't we make a mission pyramid. Ex. This week we start with NOT watching TV at all then gradually develop towards only watching TV with a good purpose. Any suggestion and comment is welcome!!

Aliya :) :) :)

Hmmm…good idea Dawn ;-)

Okay for those who want to, replace the TV with the net. We'll leave it up to you to choose. Of course some can do both if they want ;-)

We wouldn't want these missions to be easy now would we ;)

I don't have a tv, does that count?  :) I've been thinking of getting one but then .. there're so many better things I can do beside sitting in front of the tv for hours :).
Hmmm..  now, the net ..  now that's a good challenge  :-)
I've been working on limiting my internet hours ..
but Bro I've got a question, what if you have to use the net for work (i.e. freelance job need to use internet @ home )?

hmmmm, giving up the net for 5 days?! All I use the net for is reading islamic articles, coming here, reading news, and emailing my family. Wouldnt that acually be keeping me from good?? Allahu Alim

he he he gotten a little complicated on you eh brother khalid?? ;)

i have a slightly different suggestion.  assuming you were defining television in terms of its common use in wasting people's time, AND limiting them from staying in touch with the outside world AND interacting with their families more AND maybe getting a little more exercise that doesn't invlove a remote control and hand exercises AND maybe even reading more, AND you were defining internet use as an equivalent cultural activity, well then,,,he he  guess you're just sunk, eh??   no, seriously, it IS complicated isn't it -- yeah, i couldn't substitute internet, either - no one in research or school could....

so i suggest that maybe the overriding quality here is "wasting time", and maybe the challenge could just be for the Madina Team members to choose their own worst wasteful habits and give them up ---- and THEN they have to tell us what they were....!  or we could even have the sub-Madina Team of people who choose to adopt a good anti-time-wasting habit and tell us how long they kept it up for.

maybe we'll even see the evolution of some permanent positive changes -- methinks it wouldn't be a first for this madina!

mwishka

oh yeah, and i almost forgot...if we can't use the internet...we can't report in, except by sacrificing the mission....and then we'd be bad agents. :D

Asalaamu Alaikum ;-)

There's a clear two weeks to complete this Mission, so there's plenty of time to report back in.

The Mission still stands as above.

No TV or no net for 5 consecutive days.

I think it'll be interesting to see the results of this one. ;-)

::)Uh yeah... I do know about alternate methods of getting news....

:oMagazines and newspapers are too much for my budget.  Going to the library is just as expensive. I'll let you ponder over that sentance for a while.

:-/Being a Mom- my time is very limited. It is much faster to turn on the tv- (which we do not have cable- if you happen to think that cable is more expensive then magazines)- and in 15 minutes get an overall of the news.

;)Little mouse... can you really only spend 15 minutes on the internet- once you have logged on? If you are anything like me- next you know it you are on the spot or checking your e-mail!

growing up my mom answer to anything going wrong in the house was "TURN THE TV OFF!!!.  Good luck all, and people, when you given a mission you don't question the mission, you complete it and move.

Assalaamu alaikum,

I guess I have accomplished my mission. I have the same answer as brother 'Uthman.
alhamdulillah, not a problem now that the World Cup is over. .
Regarding news, I listen to the audio feed of TV news only :) The local ABC afilliate broadcast the the audio on FM. That is more than enough for me when I want to listen to local or worldnews.

Now, no internet... that is a toughie...

Wasalaam.

As-salaamu 'alaikum wa rahmatullah,

Done. Chose the "no-TV" route, since it was easier and more of a "non-issue" for me personally, than doing away with the internet. Props to those who can give up both, masha'Allah.

Alhumdulillah, it's been a while since I decided to stop watching TV. I
admit, there have been moments of weakness, but I have stayed
away from it mostly. We do have a TV but it can only play videos, it has
no antenna. So anyway, five days should not be a problem, especially
since I have a writing exam coming up. The internet, however is out
of the question. So, TV it is then. ;-)

Alhamdullilah I stayed away from tube for 5 days , i was doing pretty good but yesterday my sister was watching a movie and I gave in  :'(... May Allah(swt) give me himah to stay away from it forever.
I think the best way to stay away from tele for good is not have it  in the house. My friend and her husband decided not to buy t.v after they got married and alhamdullilah its been 2 yrs for them w/out a t.v.

Oops, hope it's not too late!
Television - well, we managed 2 days, not so successful  :(
But a good thing happened during those two days during the evenings -- so good that we turned it off for 2 more evenings. Over the 4 nights my 9 year old and I went through one of her Islamic studies workbooks and finished it, learned a couple of du'a and generally had very good evenings talking and reading! Alhamdullillah. She says we should do this every week, she really enjoyed it. We read Qur'an, and some stories and I told her some stories of the times of the Prophet  [saw]

The internet I managed about two days also, I missed the Madina though,  ;) so, I had to check in.  This was a wonderful exercise.
