this is a really terrible story...... :( but i wonder if anything was left out? what was said doesn't sound like enough to instigate such an attack.... mwishka ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Imam, two others held for attacking US Muslim By Our Correspondent FAISALABAD, July 7: Jaranwala police on Sunday arrested a Pesh Imam and two others for instigating villagers to kill an American Navy engineer on charges of blasphemy. Faraz Jawed (30), an American by birth whose parents are settled is the US, is here to see his in-laws in Chak 111-JB, Jaranwala. On Friday last, he visited the village mosque to offer Juma prayers and objected to the Pesh Imam's political speech. At that time the Imam was cursing the Pakistan government and the Americans. "Instead of blaming America, you should better tell us Islamic teachings," Fraz reportedly asked the Imam. The Pesh Imam did not like it. He asked people sitting in the mosque to kill Faraz. "He is also an American and enemy of the Muslims." Faraz managed to escape from the mosque with his relative Mohammad Naeem. After the Juma prayers, Imam Hafiz Abdul Latif called village elders and asked them to punish Faraz. Over four dozen people reportedly attacked Naeem's house where Faraz was present. Some of the attackers were also carrying iron rods, sticks and lethal weapons. Naeem locked the doors and immediately informed the area police. A police party rushed to the scene and prevailed upon the mob on the assurance that Fraz would be proceeded against for committing blasphemy. The mob dispersed after pelting stones on the house which damaged windowpanes. In the meantime, Faraz Jawed reportedly contacted the US embassy in Islamabad. The embassy reportedly took immediate note and asked the government to save the life of its national. The Jaranwala police registered two cases against Imam of the mosque, Hafiz Abdul Latif, on charge of creating law and order problem in the area and instigating the religious feelings of the people and attacking the house of Faraz family. The cases against the Imam and a dozen villagers were registered under section 16 MPO and 295-A of Blasphemy Act, while the other case was registered under section 452 and 506 PPC. The police arrested Hafiz Abdul Latif, Mohammad Asim, Zubair Usman and was making raids for the arrest of other accused involved in the incident. http://www.dawn.com/2002/07/08/top13.htm |

hard to believe, another case involving an imam ---- but i don't feel qualified to even comment on this. i seem to recall reading somewhere at islamicity about a number of major sins which "could" be punished by stoning, of which zina was one. perhaps the usefulness of both of these articles just lies in protecting islam as it is meant to be. mod/admin -- please take these away if you feel they don't serve sufficient educational purpose. mwishka =================================================================== Six culprits in stoning case identified &jbsp; By Shamsul Islam Naz FAISALABAD, July 7: A special police team has reportedly identified six persons who were mainly responsible for instigating the mob to stone the blasphemy accused, Zahid Shah, in Chak Jhumra. A senior police officer requesting anonymity told this scribe here on Sunday that President Pervez Musharraf and Governor Khalid Maqbool had taken serious notice of the Chak Jhumra incident and asked the police that the accused involved in this tragic crime should not be spared at any cost. He said three teams of the police and other intelligence agencies were given a task to identify the miscreants who had led or provoked the mob. Source also revealed that Pesh Imam Maulvi Faqir Ahmed, who had issued the decree (Fatwa) against Zahid Shah, and five others, who dragged him out of his house, were identified as the main culprits. However, the major instigator, Maulvi Faqir Ahmed, could not be arrested. "Special police commandos in plainclothes have been deputed who are watching the accused, and they can be picked at any movement. The secrecy of this action is being kept to avoid reaction from the villagers," source said. In the meanwhile, Chak Jhumra Police Station confirmed that a police team had brought back the body of Zahid from Madina Town, Faisalabad, before burial and got conducted the postmortem from area's Tehsil Headquarter Hospital. The police also told Dawn that over 50 wounds by iron rods, sticks and stones were found on Zahid's body including in the head, chest, face, legs, arms. The cause of death was said to be excessive bleeding. Family members of Zahid Shah have not yet lodged a formal complaint of the incident and identified the culprits fearing a reaction from the villagers who were still in a charged and threatening mood. http://www.dawn.com/2002/07/08/top12.htm |
