In an article that appeared June 10 on the USA Today website, author Jack Kelly broad brushes several websites under the title “Militants Wire Web With Links To Jihad” and says Jihadunspun.net promotes a holy war with the west. We’re flattered they’ve noticed us but he really should have done his homework before making such irresponsible statements.

The article names several websites, including Azzam.com, Almuhajiroun.com, Aleneda.com and others, calling them “terrorist” websites and tools used by Al-Qaida. The author goes on to say that “other Internet sites, including jihadunspun.net, offer a 36-minute video of bin Laden, with four minutes of previously unaired footage; pictures of President Bush with his head in the sights of a gun; and other propaganda” and refers to the portal as “Islamist” .

Jihad Unspun Publisher Paul-Morris-Read in a statement issued today criticized USA today for irresponsible journalism. “The statements by USA Today are simply irresponsible and published without any kind of research. One only has to spend a few minutes on our site to realize that we publish both sides of this conflict."

“Unlike the western press these days, Jihad Unspun is an open information source dedicated to understanding the issues behind the US war on "terrorism". War is our only focus and we publish mainstream and uncensored news, articles, and opinions without influence of any government, corporation, or association. We believe that viewers are intelligent enough to make their own decisions and that they want a complete picture of what’s going on – not just that information the government wants us to read.”

“For the record, Jihad Unspun is not an “Islamist” site we are a war site, without political affiliation. As a group of concerned individuals experienced in journalism and the web, we have come together from diverse religious and ethnic backgrounds to provide war coverage that one is hard pressed to find in these days of censorship. We publish feature articles and opinions from a wide range of viewpoints and that address the questions everyone is asking. We take a great deal of time to translate articles that previously have only been available to those who speak Arabic and Urdu. And we don’t publish articles or news we simply agree with – we report both sides and we do all of this without advertising revenue or contributions from any agency. We are viewer supported. We are against terrorism of any kind, we are anti war and pro human rights”

Jihad Unspun recently launched JUSPLUS, a premium content channel as a mechanism for viewer support. Publisher Paul Morris-Read says “the response speaks for itself.” ‘We know definitely that viewers want both sides of the issue or they wouldn’t be signing up to JUSPLUS to support our work. We find this very encouraging and intend to continue to build JUS as an independent news source through this and other forms of viewer support.”

In the statement issued by Morris-Read today, he says they intend to ask USA Today to print a retraction. “I am under no illusions, this article is nothing more than spin on a slow news day however I doubt very much the publication will actually take the time to research the portal or admit they have not done their homework. Either way, this article has brought a lot of new viewers to the site who took the time to click on a few articles and who have written to us and told us how refreshing it is to get uncensored news.

Jihad Unspun launched in April, 2002 and quickly gained momentum, with over half a million viewers visiting the site each day. And the numbers are growing daily
