about woman's dress codes... need help

Hello out there everyone...I am a new student of Islam and am very serious about finding a religion I can completely immerse my life into.  Now, I have been interested in studying Islam for quite some time and have researched about it here and there. I do have a copy of the Qur'an I am studying and right now I am concentrating on Women in Islam. Now, with the dress code, I have not yes found anywhere in the Qur'an  (yet) that specifically says to cover you head. I have read the part that one must cover the bosoms and lengthen the dress but not yet specifically for the head.  I am starting to lean on thinking maybe hijab is a tradition?  I would  appreciate it if someone would be able to write to me and let me know all of the suras that have anything to do with a woman's dress so that I can see for myself.
I forgot to mention that I will not go to the mosque out where I live because one of my friends who converted to Islam and went there was molested by an Imam there..  He has been reported several times and is still allowed to stay there so  I (and she) have to learn on my own as much as I can.
I have already found in the Old Testament and New Testament that there are verses that clearly show that women are below man and do not have some basic rights outlined for them. But in the Qur'an I have found verses strictly outlining the rights of women and am seeing that the Qur'an on women and the media on Muslim women (the American media) is completely different.  .
My family is Buddhist and although it is a wonderful religion, it is not practiced the way Buddha had taught it. He stated to not make any likes of him and he did believe in God. But every Buddhist temple I have ever visited always have statues of him and the people pray to him as if he were God.   I have always believed that most religions are progressions/new lessons from older ones and God has prophets to tell of his new lessons.  So, I know that to the Muslims, the Qur'an is the complete religion and that Mohammed is the last of the propets and so I am very interested in it.  I hope to learn lots and grow more and maybe this will be "the" religion I can completely live my life with.

Thank you all
TJ

Wow.. No community would stand for that taking place in their Masjid. Which community do you live in?

It's nice to know you're interested in islam. And I hope you come to a good conclusion.
Concerning hijab or covering your hair, I am sure there must  be an older thread that talks about it in detail. You'll have to search for it. Or someone on the board can post a link to it.
But the reason I'm replying is regarding what you said about your local Imaam. If what you say is true, then it is just horrible. I'm amazed he has not yet been thrown out by your city's muslim community. If the people don't know about his true character I think you should make it public.
It's disturbing to even think about it.

On a seperate note, it's quite interesting to see that a lot of people before getting to know Islam make a stop over at buddhism. To cite a couple, Yusuf Islam and Hamza Yusuf both first looked into Buddhism before even considering to know anything about Islam. I wonder why?

I don't want to start the much-hated hijab debate. So I will only post a link to a site that insha'Allah, will explain to you where headcovering in Islam comes from. (I hope you've also checked out the information on  jannah.org's sisters area!)

Why Should I Wear Hijab? http://almuhajabah.tripod.com/whyhijab.htm

Muhajabah's Web Page on Islam http://almuhajabah.tripod.com/
If you browse the site, you will find a page for sisters, with lots of stuff on hijab, and there are also pages especially for non Muslims as well.
