Please translate the following commonly used English phrases:

all over the gaff

barney

big girl's blouse

butchers

cushty

doobry

'er indoors

Don't knows aren't allowed, if you're stuck please make an (educated) guess ;-)

Salam,

I definitely am not a Brit but read a lot of Brit books..well mostly kids book. Let see if I can recall. (Time now is 4:56am) but I'll do it in sentence form so others can guess too.
Dunno if my sentences are approariate :)

1) all over the gaff  - "Son! How in the world did you get chocolate all over the gaff. You better clean up now! Grandma is coming today and I wouldn't want her to think I don't know anything abt taking care of the house!"

2)barney  - Fred and barney. Flinstone :) . "We can't design all the aeroplane seats to accomodate all Barneys!"

3) big girl's blouse  - Conversation heard at an office.
Person  A : So, boss can I get a raise?
Boss: Over my dead body!  Your work is a big girl's blouse. You don't contribute anything to this company!
Errm  maybe a bit too harsh.

4) butchers  - Conversation at a shop between a husband and wife
Husband: Hon, let's go! We've been in this shop for hours!!!
Wife: Oh, but I I just need  to butcher  one more time. The shoes are on sale!

5) cushty - ???? or cushy? If it is cushy  - "Don't get too cushy in that car. We're just test driving it"

6) doobry - Ermm???
Situation : 2 boys trying too cook coz their parents went for vacation and they have never cooked before.
Boy A : Do  you know that thing  that mom use to beat the egg? ???
Boy B : We need some kind of  mechanical device to beat eggs?   :o
Boy A: I've seen her did it before. So what's that  doobry  that mom used!?   ???

7)'er indoors - In Br Khalid thread  which test the linguistic knowledge of Madinites, he mentioned the word 'er indoors.

;D

So did  I get any correct?  :-/

Btw I tested some of this lingo on an unsuspecting [s]victim[/s] volunteer yesterday with the line:

"Don't worry, just go up the apple and pears and get the dog and bone. It'll be cushty" ;-)

That's it I ain't ever going to London !

Packs her bag, book a ticket to Singapore to learn Brit Slang 101 from Sis Barr (she's the nearest to me who happens to understands the Brits!

But I'm having fun with this!

"Don't worry, just go up the apple and pears and get the dog and bone. It'll be cushty"

I'll rephrase that and tell me if I am anywhere near the correct meaning.

Apple and pears - "We're just going up to the first floor, there's no need to use the lift. C'mon you need some exercise, let's use the apple and pears instead," said the super athletic wife to her super couch potato hubby.

*now now don't put me down on contract for this!*

dog and bone - "Quick! Go find the dog and bone . We need to report this ding-dong before it gets out of hand!!!" said person A to person B.

So, does cushty actually means "easy"?

Reckon I could survive in Britain? How abt some OZ slang... now where did I put my OZ books...

Br Uthmaan I'm impressed. ;-)

Cushty is not really 'easy' Sr Ninth Muharram. My research says it actually comes from a Hindustani word. Go figure huh?

Right with the apple and pears. Not sure about your example though. ;-)
for those of us who know what they mean are we allowed to make a little story with them?
Sure. It may help others to guess if there is some context.

Conversation overheard between two British brothers:

;-) 1: "Just had a bit of a barney with 'er indoors. Said I was leaving dirt and muck all over the gaff. I dunno mate, maybe I'd better start cleaning up after myself"

;-) 2: "Don't be such a big girl's blouse!!"

im no brit but it wouldnt be fun if i gave the answers away so heres a couple more cockney slangs, heheh, have fun!

My trouble and strife brought me nothing but misery, fighting over bees and honey which landed me in bucket and pail.

Br Khalid, and other dear brits, do enlighten us abt the cockney slang. language is sppsed to make things short and sweet, meaning easier for one to communicate, so why then the need for two words instead of one etc?

I have no idea Br Uthmaan why two words are better than one!!!

Maybe it was just a way of talking in code when it originated such that the fuzz couldn't work out what was being said!! ;-)

I'll post the answers up at the weekend inshaAllah.

Asalaamu Alaikum ;-)

Okay okay…for the sceptics amongst you, here are the answers:

all over the gaff

General term to describe someone or something that has no direction or that is in a mess.

barney

Row, violent argument.

big girl's blouse

A term that has more associations with the north of England, but is also used 'down south'. Normally used as a term to playfully ridicule a young man who is a bit soft and shy. The sort of thing your uncle might say to you. eg. "Come on, put your back into it you big girls blouse !".

butchers

Rhyming Slang , short for for 'butchers hook' meaning 'look'. A very common example of rhyming slang, usual examples are "give us a butchers" or "let's av a butchers".

Cushty

(also kushty) general word meaning everything is fine or that something has been resolved. From Hindustani 'khush' meaning 'pleasant'

doobry - a nonsensical word used when you forget the name of something, like a 'thingy'

'er indoors

The wife. Meaning the one at home. Made popular by the character Arthur Dailey from the TV series 'Minder'

Imagine the scene…..Muslim husband is cooking a surprise meal for his devoted wife. There’s a knock on the door and a friend walks in to see how he’s getting along:

Friend: So what’s cooking mate? ;) I thought I’d come over and take a butchers

Husband: Quit with the jokes man, ‘er indoors is  back in half an hour and I’m all over the shop.

Friend: How’d you get into this mess anyhow? Was it some sort of dare or something?

Husband: Yeah that jannah.org has got a lot to answer for!!! This smoked salmon ain’t looking smoked man, more like char grilled!!!! You reckon you can scrape off the burnt bits off like toast???

Friend(noticing the husband has actually been following a flapjack recipe): Hmmmm….forget that, have you seen the kitchen? Your missus is going to have a right barney at ya!!!

Husband: You’re supposed to be helping me not depressing me…here give me a hand and lend me that doobry thing over there for the sauce.

Friend: No can do man, I’ve never cooked in my life I wouldn’t know what to do.

Husband: You big girl’s blouse!!! I’m only asking you to pass me it, not cook with it!!! Sheesh

Friend(reluctantly passes the doobry)

Husband(takes it and starts stirring wildly): Oh yeah, now we’re cooking!!! Cushty :)

Friend(looking quizzically at the food)

Three hours later…..

Wife: Hmmm……that was a wonderful meal, I never knew you had it in you.

Husband(smiling): Oh well sometimes you just have to push the boat out I guess…..

THE END

Waiter: Do you want me to order a cab sir?
Waiter: Do you want me to order a cab sir?
Typical ;) Is this based on a true story? ;):P

Lets try these phrases/ words... :)
Bonus brownie points for continuing Br Khalid's "Dinner story" using these words, in no asending or descending order.

1) Making a mick

2) Doing my/his/her/their/your* head in

3) Hossy

3) Go up the wooden hill to  Bedford

Good Luck!  :-*

* delete where applicable

P.S. Ninth Muharram.. yes, pack your bags and come down! I'll give you a lesson or two ;) or maybe, you can give me some!
