clearing debts for Hajj

assalaamu alaikum everyone,

I know some people who are delaying their hajj because they need to pay all their "debts".  But these people believe before going they need pay off their mortgages, car payments, and so on.

My knowledge is limited but if that were the case then many people would not be able to perform hajj for a long time if they wait to clear mortgages and the like.

Does anyone know what kind of debts needs to be cleared.  Any help will be greatly appreciated.

jazakallah

Dear Sister Aisha
We were told to clear things like credit cards (most people used this opportunity to close the accounts because of the interest, etc.) pay all outstanding loans that we could, make arrangements for what we could not, and get everything else up to date - the large things like our homes, our car notes, etc., Allah knows best.

Many of us paid all the bills for the month we were going, so in my case, all bills were paid up for the month of February and March and in the case of my daughter's tuition Feb-April. Filled the freezer, left money for household expenses - in short left everything in order.

InshaAllah we were guided correctly, Allah made it easy for me, once I had made the intention to go, things just fell into place and it was both the fulfillment of my obligation to Allah SWT and the best thing that has ever happened to me personally in my life (other than accepting Islam in the first place.)  :)

I hope this helps. Anything I have said that is incorrect, may Allah forgive me. I will ask our guides what they can offer in the way of proofs to support what we were told, (and will post it here) but this is the common advice they give all who have travelled with their group for the past 10 years.

Because of Riba (usary in interest) we should not have these debts in the first place, such as mortages and car payments.

Food for thought: How awful it would be if you did not make Hajj because of riba.
