But now... its kinda scary.

Jumbo squid invade California beaches

Scientists in California have been baffled by the appearance of hundreds of jumbo squid which are being washed up along the San Diego coastline.
The jumbo flying squid, which are normally found in their natural habitat of the eastern Pacific Ocean, have been swarming into California waters.

Biologists are also puzzled as to why the apparently healthy squid are being washed up dead in the surf.

Some believe the arrival of the squid, whose scientific name is Dosidicus gigas, is related to El Nino.

The weather phenomenon sends warm tropical waters farther north than usual, which can facilitate the arrival of unusual marine life.

Local fishing boat captain Tyler Ingram said: "The warm water coming up had some tuna, red crabs out there and it just pretty much has to do with water temperature.

"We're supposed to have an El Nino year this year so hopefully it should be a good sign for fishing."

Attraction for fishermen

Local fisherman have men flocking to the shores to haul the squid in, while many shocked bathers have moved in the other direction.

Last week, one San Pedro fishing boat brought in over 2,000 squid.

Local fisherman Chris Pappas said: "Last night was the most unbelievable - they were just swarming underneath the boat.

"They'd stop for a second and then they would all come like, 30 or 40 of them each side of the boat."

Last week, Australian scientists believed they had discovered a new species of giant squid after a 250kg specimen was washed up dead on a beach in Hobart, Tasmania.

Experts found several characteristics which they say they have never encountered before - including long, thin flaps of muscle attached to each of the squid's eight arms.

Wow, there's probably some good deals at the restaurants out here on squid dishes.  They taste great, just a little chewey, almost like eating something rubbery.  I wonder if its possible to BBQ them.  ;)

this is such a terribly terribly sad, heartbreaking story.....

i feel so bad for those squid. :'( :'(

can you imagine what it must be like for them?  they're huge, terribly peaceful gentle creatures, and something awful is happening to them.  what is it?  are they aware of being drawn along in a warm current they can't fight?  they're powerful swimmers...    are they suffocating from some pollutant?  whole schools of them being killed - what do they say to each other as they realize they're going to die?  do they stay close to their friends and family as long as they can?  or is the current such that they have no choices?  they live to be pretty old, they probably have long associations with each other.......

and it's something we humans have done.....we're killing them and they've done nothing to us...

(um yep we all know your story silly mouse, ::) you better get a little less soft about such things, girl, if you want to survive on this planet...)

Yeah actually squid tastes great.  Maybe I should move to California until the squid storm clears up.

Don't worry mwishka, I'll try to resuscitate every single podgy squishy creature before cooking it.

You gotta wonder if those things are mutated, dude!  Oh man, check out the "dude" -- I'm turning Californian already.  Surfs up!

Have you ever heard of the Humboldt squid?  Those things are ferocious.  They hunt in packs and are completely fearless.  I would rather encounter a large man-eating shark than a pack of those things.

Sounds weird doesn't it, but you have to try it, its not all that bad, it tastes really good.  Like sushi, that stuff can taste pretty slimey, but after a while you acquire a taste for it. :)

Ohmygawd, I see that my Cali lingo is being exported to other parts of the globe.

I have now. ;)  I just looked them up, they seem like they can be pretty ferocious.  But I'm sure they taste great, I can go for some calamari (deep fried squid) now. :)

Yaa Mon!  (Sorry thought I'd throw in some of my ebonics in there).
This morning the number of dead pilot whales was 31 (9 died on Monday).  It's supposed to reach a total of 50.

Apparently, the leader of these big fat blubberies gets sick or something, and wants to pass away quietly, so it docks itself on shore.  But since it's the leader, every other Joe follows.  Then they are in waters so shallow that they suffer from dehydration, sunburn, and for some reason, their organs collapse under their own weight.   :'(

Don't ask me why I know so much about Pilot Whales.  I read the Metro-Today (freebie newspaper) on my 1.5 hour bus ride to work.

(Other news that made it in today: I guess torontonians didn't quite enjoy the Papal Visit as much as I would have imagined)

Take care.

I didn't think people ate the giant squids...  squid is very good, though. And sushi?  Yummm!
Those poor things getting tricked by the warmer waters to come closer to humans whom are only going to hurt them...

And those whales, they said on the news yesterday that that bay is confusing to the whales...because of the shape of it is a big U-turn and the sands are a very light color that the shore blends in with the waters...so the whales don't see "land" and swim in there and end up getting caught....  Also, yes, the leader becoming sick may also be the reason also..they are trying to examine some of the whales.

Poor things...wallah, poor things... :'( :'(
