[slm] Have you ever eaten at a Japanese restaurant or had Japanese food? If you have then you probably have tried that very tasty dish called tempura. Its a special batter that is used with shrimp, eggplant, sweet potato, and bell pepper in Jappanese dishes. Its deep fried and really easy to make, not to mention it tastes great. So today I tried it, and things came out great, except for my hand that got a little burned. Shrimp and Vegetable Tempura Tempura batter: 1 egg 1 cup of flour 1 cup of ice cold water (this is VERY important). Take the egg and mix it with the water. Then add in the flour and stir it up a little, but not too much, you want to leave some lumps of flour in there. Take your deep fryer and use olive oil in there and set the temperature to 350 degrees farenheit. Dimp the vegetables and shrimp in the batter and then put them in the deep fryer until they are golden brown. Serve the dish with boiled riice and perhaps some dipping sauce for flavor. This was really easy to make. And to prevent the shrimp from curling, make 3 to 4 inciscions under the shrimp's belley. It was so incredible. I imagine fish and chips could e done using this method, though I'm not sure. That's going to be another recipe I"m going to experiment with. |

= Sounds great. I wouldn't use olive oil in there though. The flavor is too strong and the oil is far too spendy. Canola oil is good for the health too and has no flavor. That's what I'd recommend. If you like those little breadcrumbs that give it an extra crunch, especially tasty for the shrimp, they are called "panko" -- you can find them in Asian food stores or if your grocery store has a good international section. They are a uniquely Japanese thing, i would seem, but they are light and fluffy and not like regular bread crumbs. You'd put them on after you dipped them in the batter. [wlm] i have tried japanese food once when my sis was pregnant and i find it hard to agree with the food except for tempura . the funny thing bout the restaurant was they only served japanese as drinks and i couldnt drink a green color tea :o. luckily the restaurant allowed me to bring drink from outside (i had to get orange juice from next door) but i must say the tempura was really delicious :) the food must have run in the blood cause my almost 3 yrs old nephew seems to love japanese food ;D that was my personal experience with japanese food.. taste of food can be subjective..so for those who like to taste it, by all mean just go for it :-* [slm] :-) |
