Conversion Story : What have I given up?

I grew up non-Muslim, lived a typical childhood and went on to have some "adventures" in the "real world" before Allah guided me to Islam.  I worked for a while in the social services field, so I saw the underbelly of society close up and in person.

Since I became Muslim, I have shut myself off from many harmful influences.  I don't have to worry about being groped by some stranger in a nightclub, because I don't go to nightclubs.  I don't have to worry about getting attacked in a parking lot at night, because I
almost always only go out at night in the company of my husband.  I don't have to worry about hangovers since I don't drink alcohol, and I don't have to be fearful of an unwanted pregnancy because I don't
commit fornication.  I don't have to worry that some day care provider is going to smack my son around or neglect him, because I am blessed with a hard-working husband who encourages me to stay home to take care of my son.  I don't have to worry about my hair, my nails or my makeup when I leave the house because I don't adorn myself outside my home.  I don't have to worry about being behind the latest fashion curve because my jilbaabs are in style year after year.  I don't have to worry about spraining an ankle in high heels because I wear silent, comfortable shoes that come off the moment I enter the mosque or someone's home, so
who cares if they are from Payless.

You get the idea.  I've opted out of the "real world" in so many ways.  Actually, there are millions of people in the US and the rest of the world, and not just Muslims, who don't partake of the wild side of
life and have morals and values.  They, we, are just as real as anyone else.

What have I given up?  Okay, so I can't take a stroll on the beach in shorts and soak up the sun, but if Allah grants me Jannah, then I'll have the most beautiful garden in which to live for eternity.  I
can't relax with a nice glass of wine (yuck, never could stand the stuff, but this is an illustration), but if Allah grants me Jannah, I will be able to drink from a fountain that will refresh me eternally and I will never feel intoxicated.  I can't sit down in the
nicest restaurant in town and spend the evening eating whatever I want off the menu, but if Allah grants me Jannah, I'll merely have to reach out and the fruit tree will stretch to offer me its bounty.

So you see, I am not giving up anything, merely practicing delayed gratification, making a trade which is easy when I consider the great reward that awaits....

If Allah grants me Jannah....

May Allah guide us all and make us inheritors of Jannah in the Hereafter.

I totally agree with you here.  It's the same thing for those who were born Muslims as well, we need to realize that this world is only a short stop on our journey to Akhirah.  The important thing is not to forget that! InshaAllah :)

Dear brother Betul:  This is not my personal Story. It's the story of one of my reverted Muslim friend Nancy. She posted her story on one of the Female Discussion  Forums.  I really liked it therefore,  i thought of sharing this with all members of Madina City. I am sorry for any confusion.  I am Alhamdullillah born Muslim.  Please remmber me in your prayers.
