The PDA debate!

I don't know if this is the right forum for this, but I've been looking around for a palm and I'm not really sure which one is best. So i guess i'm asking which is the best bang for your buck  ;D Right now the sony clie PEG 615C and the Palm 515 look pretty good.   The things that are important for me to have would be a lot of memory and a color screen.

Any advice?

I have Handspring Treo 180. The only reason I went for it was that it was the only in market with GSM phone + Palm PDA in one. I'm not totally satisfied with it. The part of the reason for the not so good experiance is also the lousy cingular service here in southern california. I found clie T series sleek and neat. But the T415 has a horrible screen, you could easily become blind using it ;). The 615C I guess is pretty neat. Sony has also come out with T665C a color with MP3 player. Check that out if you are interested in MP3 player. And if you want camera, mp3 player and keypad check out NR70V. I find PDAs from palm bulky. They are not as sleek as clies and treos. And I would definately not go for windoze pocket pc pda. I guess clies are the best bet.

salaams,

Ahh another techy gadget topic.

I've found the Cnet site to be very useful www.cnet.com
Currently, I'm waiting for the prices of wireless PDA's to drop and then I'm off to mget my hands on either the Sony Taurus Linux PDA or the Toshiba E740 Win CE.

However, if you live in the States then do your research I'm sure you can get some sound deals I think one outlet is called comp usa they seem to selll some good stuff at  fairly good prices.

Anyway I'll post more later...
By the way what are you going to use your PDA for..?

Inshallah I would like to use my PDA as a resource tool when i start my rotations in the hospital at the end of the month. I've heard they can come in quite handy when you need to look info up in a jiffy! Supposedly there are a lot of programs and books and references, etc that can be put onto the PDA. So i'm thinking i'd like something w/ a decent amount of memory. I don't think i need anything flashy, like i don't see myself playing games on it.

Hmm, anything decent would be of 32mb of ram. Would the hospital have wireless access as well ??? If so the you'd need a PDA witha wireless card or one built into it. However, wireless is currently open to hacks in other words its not very secure. Yet if you intend to use it as a research tool then a PDA with 32mb of ram can cram enough info...and make sure you have backup batterys as they can drain a PDA within hours...

Most of the loved PDAs are Compaq, HP, Toshiba, Audiovox, Palm and a couple of others. And again the price can drop or rise considerably if you are going to have colour, keyboard or the PDA OS system.
I'd research for a bit and then buy one... I mean think of this... on a decent PDA you can have the Quran or Islamic Talk on MP3 format.

Thought I'd add my $0.02 to this discussion.  The world of PDAs is split based on one rough criterion: the operating system that it runs.

PalmOS is the name of the operating system that, in an earlier iteration, ran the original PalmPilots.  The latest version (5.0 I believe) is a very slick and mature operating system that has many many applications written for it.  Being the grand-daddy of all the PDA OS's in the market now, it has the unique position of having the most amount of software written for it.  Everything from prayer schedulers to appointment schedulers, pocket accounting programs, games and beyond.  PalmOS powered PDAs are made by a variety of manufacturers, the most popular being the ones made by Palm Inc (the Palm series), Handspring Corp (the Visor series) and Sony Corp. (the Clie series).  With a wide variety of applications and hardware available for this platform, this is certainly a very viable platform for novices and powerusers alike.

Windows PocketPC is the name of the operating system that powers another type of PDA.  These boast the ability to easily port applications from Windows (desktop versions) to PocketPC (previously known as Windows CE).  Of course this doesnt imply that applications are being ported over on an hourly basis.  Nevertheless, the amount of software available for PocketPC PDAs is considerable.  With the added ability to read (and theoretically edit, altho why you would want to edit on a tiny computer without a proper input mechanism is beyond me) Microsoft Office documents, this is targetted at those users who just cannot get enough of Windows.  With the clout of the world biggest software manufacturer behind it, this is almost certain to be a decent choice for the average user.

Linux is the up and coming free (as in free soda as well as free speech) operating system that is powering desktops, servers and now PDAs.  Most examples of Linux powered PDAs are obscure such as the Yopi, the Agenda VR3 etc.  However, the latest breed of Linux powered PDAs are more intuitive to use for the average user and a whole lot of fun for the expert Linux user.  The most significant PDA running on the Linux platform nowadays is the Sharp Zaurus.  Keep in mind that Linux, because it's free in every sense of the word, promotes software developers from all around the world to write freely available (and many commercial) applications for the desktop and PDA environments.  Further, since most Linux PDAs are able to run Java, you have access to a wide variety of Java applications that can run on your PDA.  However, the number of applications currently is very low and I would not recommend anyone but a true linux lover to try their hands on this.  However, this category should also not be dismissed lightly and is definitely a category to watch out for.

To summarize and conclude then, if you need something that will be functional enough for the average to expert user, go for the PalmOS or PocketPC powered PDAs.  If you are a Linux lover, try the Zaurus, you will love it.  Among the two main contenders, however, you should look at some software sites for the two operating systems and see which ones have applications that would be extremely important to you.  Make your choice based on that.  Remember, unless you can use your PDA the way _you_ want to, it will not be an effective aid in your life.

You can find software for all three OS categories at http://www.handango.com
Take a look at http://www.thekompany.com/embedded/ for a complete list of theKompany's software for Linux PDAs.

I hope this information helps
