Starting to read the Quran
Caraj
07/31/02 at 21:35:47
I was sent a Quran and read bits and parts of it but allowed life to get in the way. Now I'm on a mission and if any of the bro's or sister have time I'd like some help.

I am starting this Fri and will read/study a page or two. I'll write a short thing about what I read and what I got out of it. If anyone wishes maybe they can give me insight as to,   if I understood what I read, maybe give suggestion of things to cnsider.

I'll commit to 1 to 2 pages 5 days a week. And if I miss a day I wouldn't  at all mind some encouragement. (Gentle kick   ;) )

Anyone willing???

Oh please do join in.
So when you started to study the Quran did you start
at the begining or is there a recommended place for
beginners to start?

I had joined a study circle back home in India 6 months before I left for the US,we would meet up for an hour and half on a FRI morning
we covered surah saff and ankabut completely and a part of Khaf before I left,The circle still meets back home .
Well you can start any where for, evry line of the Quraan is facinating,
I throughly enjoyed myself ,Saff is a good starting place cuaz its small and can be completed fast and there are a couple of Theme,s Allah swt dwells on in there
If you like to start with a story surah yusuf is good for even Allah swt calls it Ahsanul Qasas
Its nice to have some company cuaz one can deliberate and discuss
I wonder which transalation are you using and I would love to join you

I'll join you guys. Let's use YUsuf Ali's translation. Also, we'll have to decide on the frequency...what about 3 times weekly?

Dr. Muhammad Muhsin Khan

I've got the Hilali/Khan translation too. We could start from Sura Faatiha and Baqara...
How do we send feedback to each other? I think a Yahoo or MSN group would be practical.

I agree with starting from the begining..now we need to decide how many ayahs we should study at a time.
The Quran is divided into 30 juz, and each juz is divided into 2 hizb and each hizb is divided into 4 quarters (rooba' hizb) If you go to ayah 26 of AlBaqarah, you will see a star right before it..this means that the first rooba' hizb ended at ayah 25. So do you think studing a rooba' hizb is good, or is that too much?
I think we could just post what we learned and what we understood on a thread, that way everyone can read and join in.. (and it would be easier for me).
I'd like to do what caraj was planning.. 5 days a week would be nice. What does everyone think?

This thread is so inspiring, masha’Allah!  I’m in.   :)

Whatever surah/chapter you choose is not as big an issue (since, God willing, we’ll learn something from any part), but the translation is a bit more concerning.

I have the Khan/Hillali translation. I love it. But I wouldn’t recommend it to non-Muslims as a first reading. I really believe it’s translated for non-Arabic speaking Muslims, while the Yusuf Ali was originally meant as a translation for non-Muslims.

So if may make a small suggestion, please use the Yusuf Ali with commentary version (maybe newer editions contain less Old English). If you don’t have this translation (is it online with translation and commentary, anyone?), please let me know, insha’Allah.

May God guide us all to what is right and grant us right knowledge/wisdom, aameen.

mashaAllah great idea! I'd also love to join in. I've got marmaduke pickering's translation of the Holy Qur'an on paper, but inshaAllah i might be able to get a hold of the Yousuf Ali translation on floppy disk. I like the idea of Caraj's of doing 1/2 pages 5 times a week. How many pages does a rooba hizb usually constitute? is a rooba hizb based on sort of a "paragraph" in the surahs?? Any way that this is decided, inshaAllah I'm up for it :) I'd just like to mention though that please can you not cover too much in one go if that's possible, as it's inshaAllah quality of understanding not quantity of translation covered that would be great.  :-*

I dont think that the translator is very important. Based on what Caraj wrote, it's going to be like a journal...what we get out of the verses, or else we could just use the tafseer and that's it, no more discussion.

Right now, seven of us are in. Will each one of use submit 5 times every week? That's very important. ALso, I think we need somebody to lead the discussion, and I'm thinking of Caraj for this role.

We also have to agree on where and how we'll submit our feedback. I'd prefer some group which will be more easy to organize and browse thru. But if you prefer to start a thread in here every other day...it's up to you.

Caraj...did you start last Friday as planned? ;)

Lets try to have this all planned and started my Friday...
Im in for the 5 days a week, lets not worry about which translation we use..I like the idea of posting here on threads since it will be more journal type writing..inshaAllah we can start from the begining and try to aim for studing the quran from cover to cover.. now we need to decide on how much to study each day.. roobaa hizb isnt really that much, look in your qurans and you will see the stars..each star is roobaa hizb. So what else do we need to discuss so we can all start? Im so excited! I would love for Caraj to lead this.. but we need someone who will be able to post each time.. If she can do it, thats great!

Ok, just to get everything started, I went ahead and made a group for us on yahoo.. Here's the address:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/MadinaFamilyQuran/
It's not listed..meaning we will probably be the only ones in the group (I thought that was better to keep it small) I named it madinafamily..because I really feel we have all became family here. (I hope Jannah doesnt mind the name?)
Since I signed up for the group, right now Im moderater, but I will take my name off of that once we find someone to lead this..
So what do you all think? Can we get started?

ps. how do you like my pic of quran i put up?  8)

With so many of us interested, I think I should sign up to. If only caraj had come up with this idea four months earlier I woudn't have had to study the Quran all alone. But the good news is I'm almost at the end. I think three more days for completion.
Anyways, just let me know when you guys decide on the details.
