| Israel suspends CNN Gaza |WAM | 02-08-2002 Print friendly format | Email to Friend Israel's Cable and Satellite Transmission Authority (CSTA) has endorsed suspending the transmission of CNN news and information television network throughout the country, the official Hebrew Radio said. "The (CSTA) approved Fox News to replace CNN." The move was prompted by a statement given by Ted Turner, CNN founder, to The Guardian, in which he branded Israel's excessive use of force as terrorism. In The Guardian article, Turner asked, "Aren't the Israelis and the Palestinians both terrorising each other? "The Palestinians are fighting with human suicide bombers, that's all they have," he was quoted as saying. "The Israelis ... they've got one of the most powerful military machines in the world. The Palestinians have nothing. So, who are the terrorists? I would make a case that both sides are involved in terrorism." In his statement, Turner said his main concern is a "peaceful and prompt resolution" of the conflict and that he is "pained by the loss of life on both sides." Turner, reacting to criticism of his comments, said he regretted "any implication that I believe the actions taken by Israel to protect its people are equal to terrorism." "My comments were part of a long and extensive interview that I gave two months ago when I was condemning the loss of human life," said Turner, vice chairman of CNN's parent company, AOL Time Warner. |
