snowboarding with hijab?

[slm] sistas,

It's winter here in the land down under  :).
I'll be going snowboarding in a week's time and this is the first time I'll be going wearing hijab! So my question is: has any sisters here went skiing/snowboarding with the hijab? And if so, how do you properly secure it so it won't come off if I fall?  Do you wear the beanie on top of the hijab? Hehehe...I can't imagine how i'll look like.

Jazak for your reply.

Sis, you might try wearing a buknuk (one-piece hood-type hijab) or one of the two-piece Syrian Amira hijabs when you ski.  They stay put really well, and wouldn't interfere with your beanie.   :-)

good advice by pearl. I think a beanie over a hijab would look better than a hijab over a beenie, heh ;)

Just pin your hijab securely (not too tightly) under your chin; and if you want, take one end (if its long enough) and take it all the way around your neck and pin it tightly to the other end which you'll place on your shoulder. Hmm let me try those instructions again. Pin your scarf at the chin with one end slightly longer than the other. take the short end and place it on the opposite shoulder - then take the longer end over the other end wrap it all the way around your neck bringing it on top of the shorter end (which your placed on your shoulder and pin it the longer end to the shorter end - close to the neck. I like pinning it this way keeps it from slipping and keeps your neck just a lil' bit warmer, and if it gets too hot you can just unpin it and let the ends hang down or tie them loosely. Hope that helps - and beanie over your hijab will definitely be better:)

Check out a white scarf typically worn by Malaysian women when they pray.

They have little strings on the sides which wrap and tie behind the head on top of the scarf.

I've been skiing with my hijab...hehe it was quite fun :D  I normally wear a bandana under my hijab, so that everything is "secure" underneath.. and then with the hijab that's on top..I just pinned it down and stuffed it in my jacket..and off I went.  Another good tip is wrapping a scarf around your neck...that ensures no flying hijabs :)

I snowboard too.  Bqt I don't wear my Hijaab doing it.  I wear one of those really comfy tuques, and then take a scarf (as in winter scarf, not hijaabi scarf), and wrap it around well, so that it covers up to my chin.  Also, I've tried wearing a normal hijaab, pinned the normal way (try pure cotton, it won't slip), and then I wear this thing on top of it that I found at Hikers Haven.  They still sell it.  It's a fleece bandana, with velcro straps, that you can pull behind your head and fasten securely.

Oh and, make sure you get wrist guards :P
