Please help us honor the death of our loved ones by (moving) towards a future of peaceful tomorrows.” Kelly Campbell, September 11 Families for a Peaceful Tomorrow Interfaith Peace Walk August 25 --- September 11, 2002 Schenectady to New York City As the country prepares for more war against “terror,” we walk to honor those killed at the World Trade Center with the dream behind which we can all unite –the vision of a peaceful world. War can lea` us only to more fear, retaliation and terrorism. We will visit churches, mosques, temples, synagogues, and sites sacred to the Native Peoples of this land to hear the voices of all forms of prayer and to learn how we—as individuals and as a nation—can end fear, misunderstanding, and division and renounce violence and terror in all its forms. This walk is inspired by the Jewish-Muslim Walk for Peace held this past April when Israel increased the violence of its occupation of Palestinian lands. Three hundred interfaith walkers made a historic journey across Albuquerque from the Nhalet Shalom Synagogue to the Islamic Center of New Mexico to affirm their common desire for peace. Anyone can join for any length of time. Drugs, alcohol, and weapons of any kind are not allowed. Women are asked to bring scarves to wear in respect when visiting mosques. For more information, contact Grafton Peace Pagoda 5 1 8 658-9301 or Yunus Fiske, 5 1 8 273-0167, or email yunusfiske@yahoo.com Initiated by Nipponzan Myohoji Buddhist order, Grafton Peace Pagoda and the Capital District for Justice and Peace Schedule for the walk through the Capital Region is as follows: Walk from Schenectady to Albany on Sunday August 25th: The walk will begin in Schenectady starting at the Dunkin Donuts near Mohawk Mall. We will leave from there at 8 am and walk down Rt.5 (Central Ave) to the Islamic Community Center located at 21 Lansing rd (near Ethan Allen). Our expected arrival time is 8:30 am. We will depart the Islamic Community Center at around 9 am. From the Islamic Community Center we will proceed down Rt5 to wolf rd then walk down Albany Shaker rd to the Hindu Temple (which is located near Tippon rd on Albany Shaker). Our expected arrival time is 12:30 pm. At the Hindu temple we will have a brief lunch with an expected departure of 1:30 pm. After our visit to the Hindu Temple w e will head towards downtown Albany. The route we will follow will be down Albany Shaker rd to Everett rd and from there to Central Ave. Places of worship that we will be stopping at in Albany are to be announced. At the end of the walk we will gather at the Capitol building for a peace vigil around 4pm. Walk from Rensselear to Troy On Monday August 26th: We will start the walk at the Albany Amtrak station in Rensselear at 1:30 pm. From the train station we will walk down Broadway to Washington Ave stopping at St Anthony on the Hudson around 2:30 pm. our expected departure from St Anthony will be around 3 pm. From St Anthony we will proceed down Rt.4 to Rt. 2. We will walk to Berith Shalom in Troy (which is located at 3rd and division St.). Our expected arrival time at Berith Shalom is 5:30 pm. We will walk from the Synagogue to Masjid Al Hidaya (which is located at 21 15th St) where we will end for the day.
