Applying Smell Goods.....

Salaams,
Ok brothers I need to vent.  OK, sometimes like on eid or jummah, you see a brother and he walks up to you and hugs you, and you wind up smelling like the back of his neck and\or your hands are DRENCHED in some oil that the brother is wearing.  Now if it was a scent that was a nice one maybe I wouldn't mind.  Like the time I was at albany camp, the Imam from the troy masjid came and I gave him salaams,  his smell goods smelled so good I was gonna give him another hug.  But more chances then not, a brother's smell goods, are SMELL BADS!!!! >:(
I can't tell a brother what smell goods to wear, he may like what he smells like, maybe his wife likes it.  But I think we can make a compromise on how it's applied.  In stead of lathering your hand up with your fav smell good.  Put said smell goods on you wrist rub them together and apply them to other areas as you see fit.  Atleast my hands will be free of smell goods that SMELL BAD.   What do you think, am i the only one with this problem.  And sisters, why do you send your husbands out smelly like that?

I think it's the 'It'll last longer' effect akhi

Personally i think the worst is that fruity smelling stuff.. I mean
why don't you just give me the mango and keep the smell !

But you see it with a lot of guys in my area too with clothes
..instead of wearing a suit that looks good and says class...
they wear something that looks rubbish with a big logo

the funniest was going to court cases where the ppl were being done
for smuggling drugs and these guys dress like drug dealers in
 front of the jury !  ;D  ;D

Generally akhi all you can say is 90 % of the male species don't
know how to look or smell good !

Hmmm...I know what you mean about the "pong"  :D My dad used to apply the ittr quite heavily and I used to hate it  :) For years and years I would just stick to my armanis and other "cool" fragrances. Then one day I read that angels really like the smell of musk and so I dipped into my dad's ittr collection and sloshed some on each time I went to mosque for prayers  8) Everyone else might complain but Allah likes musk and so do angels so I say "Up the pong!!!"  :-*

My husband used to wear the worst smelling oils, until we found a place that sells really nice ones. Now he wears the designer types of oils that smell sooooo good...but...  now he thinks he needs to mix everything together! I just dont understand it... ::)

Brother Naeem since you have had the opportunity to smell so many could you share with us which ones to stay away from and which ones to get?  Which one do you personally use and what does it smell like?

Fragrances are tricky business.  Everyone has their own personal tastes and many times a fragrance will be altered when you apply it to your skin.  I believe it has to do with ph or something...maybe the resident chemist knows.

Assalamu alaikum,
Perhaps the very best oil that I've ever smelled is one my husband got for his father when we were on Hajj.  It's called Mazeej al Haramain (the Haramain blend).  Ma sha Allah it was smelled so good and his father loved it.  If anyone has a chance to get some... They also gave him a little tester of another oil but it was very feminine so I use it at home.
I used to hate the smell of sandalwood but now I've developed a taste (smell?)  for it cause my husband loves it.   I also used to dislike musk scented  stuff but when I smelled real musk, ma sha Allah, no wonder the Prophet  [saw] used to refer to it and speak of it so much and that everything good smells like musk, like the blood coming out of shaheeds' wounds on yawm al qiyama and the earth of jannah which is made of musk...  I say if you're going to use musk rub the real thing on you or scratch a little off with your fingernail to make a powder and use that.
Unfortunately the best smelling oils are almost always the most expensive cause they're closest to essential oils, and the worst smelling is those little bottles of cheap oil (I'm sorry but it's usually true :( )
So, my advice to the brothers, if you use an oil use the real thing.  Even rose oil which is usually thought of as feminine smells  good even for men when it's the real thing.

I remember a time when a group of us sisters were walking somewhere, and a car with a bunch of guys in it stopped near us.. and we could literally smell the cologne the guys were wearing from the street!!

go easy on the musk brothers :)

bro dirt,

just for you!  and to corroborate sis mariam's cheap=stench comments...

scent molecules are esters um let's see how to describe...start by looking at just one particular carbon in an ester:  a carbon which is double-bonded to an oxygen (this C=O combination is called a "carbonyl" functional group), which will also be singly-bonded on one side to an oxygen which links it (called an ester linkage) to whatever the rest of the carbon-chained molecule on that side is, and on the other side it will be single-bonded to some other usually small carbon-chain grouping.

esters are not water soluble, they're distilled as oils - hence the name "essential oil".  good perfumes use natural esters, and are not watery.

cologne is a dilute version of perfume - that's why it costs less.

CHEAP colognes or perfumes use ketones, not esters.  they're much cheaper to synthesize.  problem is, ketones (which are like an ester but without the single oxygen link, instead the carbonyl is internal to carbons on both sides) unfortunately are also less stable than esters, and when they break down, even from the heat of your skin, they degrade into.......dreaded aldehydes, which are some of the nastiest smelling compounds on the planet!  pphheeeeeewwwwwww!!!!

the end.  for bro dirt.

mwishka

ps. the more subtle changes in a single perfume when applied to different people's skin IS pH and heat related change - you're right.  but that's WAY more complicated and would have to be described per perfume, knowing its component scents, and based on the change observed per individual.  he he i chose to just tell you the simple example of why a cheap "perfume" can downright stink compared to a more costly one.....

Salaams,
Well bahloo, I'll have to ask some brother what they where, but I know there is this one called uud, some brother swear by it, I don't like it.  ANd like the brother said, it's by personal preference.  I like light smells, not heavier darker scents.  On the darker side, a real old school scent i liked was somali rose.  It has a real clean fresh scent.  Another old school fav on the lighter side would be egyptian musk. Most people lather that on to, and it take on a totally different smell, it's more of a upclose, light smell, not for turning heads.  I go to this one shieks house and he has this scent that is housed in a box that looks like the kabbah, it's red and really nice.

Ok another thing, and I think I am crazy for this.  But different smells, changes in weather, make me remember certain things.   So if a person I don't particularly care for wears a certain scent, over and over again.  I could never where it because I would associate it with that person.  Even if it's not a person I don't like, like I had a boss I was cool with, but he wore obsession, I could never where that because it would feel like my boss is looming around.  I know I'm wierd ;D , I prefer eccentric :-*

Yeh, you guys gotta stop with that stench.  Being a girl, and after assuring all of you that I do not go around smelling brothers, I can tell you that it really isn't very pleasant being able to smell you half a mile off.  A friend of my brothers stayed at our house for a  month after he got kicked out of his home, and my parents volunteered my room to him.  I couldn't get that "Safari" smell out of my closet, and carpet, and pillow, and mattress for weeeeeks after he left.  He seriously used to shower in that stuff.  And whenever I smell that stench on a bus or school or work, my gag reflex kix in, and I have to hold my breath until it passes.  You know how sometimes you can smell a memory?  Well there you have it.  So for all those whom this concerns, please...for reasons of altruism, and if you can't find any of those, for ME, quit the excess.  :)

Wasalaam.

I ALWAYS smell good! ;)  So to help some of you brothers I will suggest some good oils.  Some one already mentioned blue nile.  Nice stuff!

Others would be Oud (The real stuff)

Egyptian Musk

Blackstone (If you can find it.)

Musk is always a favorite

Somolia Rose

and the Oil in present use for myself (and a highly suggested one)

Nag Champa.

The only problem is finding a good place that sells them.

If your in the Minnesota area I could steer you to a couple of places. :)

Perhaps you were looking for Hinna made by Haamil AlMisk? If so, you can buy it online here: (or maybe it will smell the same as Ajmals?)

http://www.muskcarrier.com/Merchant2/merchant.mv?Screen=CTGY&Store_Code=MC&Category_Code=arabic

I haven’t tried these perfumes at this site, but I have tried some of Haamil AlMisk’s perfume oils from Saudi. They came in really fancy bottles and smelt soooo good. One is called Maqaam  ÚØÑ ÇáãÞÇã  and the other is called Mukhallat AlWazir ãÎáØ ÇáæÒíÑ
I don’t know about these cheaper ones though.

There are also perfume oils that smell just like the real perfume sprays. I have about 30 different kinds and most of them smell awesome. Tommygirl, Weekend, Pleasures, HugoBoss are some of my favorite oils for women..Some of my favorites for men are Pleasures, PoloSport, HugoBoss, AcquaDiGio,XS,CK1. But don’t mix them or they will smell horrible! You can buy some of them here:

http://www.desertboutique.econgo.com/

Just click on cosmetics, toiletries and foods, then perfume oils.

Ok, I’m a perfume addict, but I only wear it inside. :) Don’t get me started on bakhour, lol.

I apologize brother but I wouldn't be able to tell you where you could find blackstone.  I ran across it at an Islamic Center a couple of years ago at their annual Eid carnival.  I've been looking for it ever since but haven't been fortunate.  It is a very good scent though!

The musk at our masjid and one I find to smell very nice is Jannat-ul Firdaus.  It is an awesome scent and when put on lightly, it smells real nice.  I was looking for some to get for my bro but couldn't find any.

I agree with you, aldehydes ARE one of the worst smelling compounds on the planet.
Don't you guys just love chemistry, it's so interesting and fun, cause you get to study the structure of so many molecules and compounds.  InshaAllah organic chemistry will be as much fun as a major as it is a class  ;D

hee heee sis betul,

there are six chemists that i know of here, though a couple are um hiding out for their own reasons:  you, me, bro abu hamza, sis zomorrud, and um two chemists-in-hiding.....   that's three biochemists, one organic near-chemist, right? and one soon-to-be-chemist, eh sis X? plus a NO LONGER chemist..... :(.......now in IT!...... :'(   ;)

as for jannat ul-firdaus, bro kashif had asked for this in naseeha a while back, and i found it for him here:

http://shop.store.yahoo.com/islamicshoppingnetwork/attrad.htm

i think there were other perfume sources given in that discussion - don't have time now to go look for it, though....

(i never see you, sis, even in the halls.......guess cause there are no classes in cogswell, eh?..... ;)...and i rarely leave there.. )
