the amazing little wasp....

ok, there are a bunch of serious things in ummah that i need to reply to, but i decided to tell you about a wasp instead....

there's an amazing little wasp in my kitchen, and she's really helping me, so here's her story..

about a week ago my air conditioner died, and the owner of the house, usually very good about any kind of repair, never showed up to fix it.  so, well, me and them cats have been purt near unconscious a lot.  the fans just can't keep the heat under control.  you know what melted cats look like, right?  really loooooooonnnnnnnnngg stretched out on they bellies...  poor kitties...

anyway, it was so hot in here we were all constantly dehydrated...then one morning the power went out, the fans stopped.  the temperature went through the ceiling.  very very bad in here....   it came back on, but it was really stifling in here by then.

that night i came home from my lab, and when i gave ophelia her wet food, i noticed a little wasp clinging desperately to the underneath edge of her kibble (dry food) bowl.  she (the wasp) was so dehydrated looking her wings were almost rolled at the edges.  she was young and slender, and and not very big.  that china dish was probably the coolest surface she could find, and i suspect that she was hungry but too weak and dry to chew on  the kibble....

i took her and put her on the counter, and gave her one piece of kibble, just in case she could eat it but was too weak to make it over the edge of the dish.  she couldn't.

i dampened the sponge cloth that catches stray drips from glasses hanging over the edge of the dish drainer, and set her on it.  she became agitated, obviously she was too dry, and probably started soaking moisture in too fast, or something, and she lurched off the cloth, hiding under the drainer.  i had just put some grapes with bad ends in the compost, so i got her one of those and set it near her, and put a few little bits of kibble against the sponge cloth to get mushy so she could eat them if she got strong enough.

she wobbled directly to the grape, tried to climb onto it, couldn't.  she fell.  i gently nudged her toward the end of it.

this little wasp, probably near death, pulled herself up, grasped the end of the grape there where the stem hole was, and half laying on the counter, half hanging, she started drinking the grape liquid from the end of it.

the next morning she was still ther drinking, looking much stronger.

that's where the story gets amazing!  by the end of that day when i got home, she was strong enough to have climbed up on top of it, but was still drinking.  i offered her a bit of kibble, but she didn't notice.

this morning when i got up, there she was still drinking, and looking very strong and well, standing now and not lying, with her wings almost straight and almost held up...

when i got home this evening, she was still there drinking, and she was obviously well!!  i was SO happy! she was like a little miracle wasp....she almost died, baked to death in the oven of my apartment, as did two other wasps that i only found this evening..  :(

but this one little wasp, so weak she could barely even drag her head high enough to reach the grape, too weak to stand, reminded me by her patience and perserverance that a futile situation is not always so futile.  it has been really inspiring to watch her work so hard and so patiently to regain her strength, and to see her recover so well because she knew which of the things i offered her - water, meat, or fruit - were exactly what she needed.

i just checked on her a bit ago.  she's still drinking from that grape, and is REALLY strong now...

(ok, i know i'm kind of nutty telling wasp stories, but she really impressed me with her inner strength, and her determination, and reminded me that you just always just have to keep plowing your way through even things you're not so sure you can handle...)

mwishka (who'd tell you the wasp's name if she knew it......:) )

Is it a real wasp or a bee? Strange behavior for a wasp... ;)

This is a good story.  I think there is a moral in here somewhere and perhaps "someone" is trying to tell you something...

It would probably be a good idea to ponder upon these events.   :)

oh no br aadam, she's a regualr wasp - the black with tiny yellow stripes kind...  i think she went for the glucose/water mix because she was so close to death.  this is a green (white) grape, and they're maybe the only food i can think of that's pretty much like a straight glucose source - still fructose, but the digestion of green grapes isn't as complicated as that of red or black (purple) grapes.  (one clue there is just the more complicated taste of the dark grapes....)

sis hijabi4L, he hee  it's the little WASP who's inspiring in THIS story....  ;)

sis truthfinder, mice um play with um all living things, i guess you could say.....

and bro dirt, you're telling me i was "set-up" to help that poor wasp??  ;)  though it's she who's helping me....    i'm um thinking about it, not to worry....... :)

...and the things Allah swt provided....

Perhaps, like the grape which the wasp so desperately needed compares to something you so desperately need...

Which of His signs do you deny?

Subhan'Allah.  The pleasures some people derive from wasps.  Honestly, I was more interested in the grape :P

On that note, I must say, that was a really good story.  And I am not exagerrating.

Wasalaam.

Salam alaykum,

Subhn'Allah it remind me of the aya" ..We will soon show them Our signs in the Universe (around you) and in their own souls...",
many a times one will see another dimension to things just around us,its in one's state of the heart.
AS the poet said" sometimes one can get from the river what one can't get from the oceans"
Ti's not the eye which see but the soul.
and as the other poet said" .. only those who can perceive behind the images are the people of discernment.."

Jazak'Allah khayr for this gift of wisdom sister May He (swt) increase you many fold..

bro alzinjibar, your words are very kind....

bro siddiqui, um you shouldn't encourage me, you know?  :D   i'm already on the madina blacklist for writing too much here.... ;)

but actually, i THINK that writing fiction is kind of different than telling stories which happened for real - which is my um "compulsion".....

(ok, ok, so um some of my "true" stories kind of waver back and forth between fact and fiction......  especially if they have a mouse in them...)

that's a neat story.  i always thought wasps were a nuisance cos they dont make honey and are capable of stinging you repeatedly.  i think you can sense the hidden trauma behind my reasoning.  ;)  i'm just waiting for the sequel now where the wasp is on the run from drug smugglers with a car chase and laconic sidekick in tow.

I know that feeling...  ;D   ;D   ;D ..i feel sorry for the poor bee
it gives it's life to protect it's loved ones. Why are moths mentioned
in poems and not bee's..i mean would you make up a song
about a guy who repeatedly bangs his head against a wall?

sorry but that's already been done...it's called the green hornet
Nafisa i'm actually in the position where I can suggest ideas
for TV programmes ..  ;D My friends a producer for London
Weekend Television (LWT) ..remember the 'Fat Club' ?

[slm]  Muqaddar,

i do remember 'fat club'.  is it the prog where real ppl went on a diet?  i was soooo hooked on that!  it made for good telly.  although i have my own celebrity connections.  i shouldn't divulge further to protect the 'celebrities' in question.  LOL ;D

actually, it's always been a pipe dream of mine to write a screenplay for TV.  i'd write a drama about present day muslims.  perhaps, i could nick the plot off a Madinat thread.   :D

i got my friend to come down and interview my ex-employer
cause he's really fat  ;D ..  I had a chat with his wife and
she almost managed to make him go on it.. It was when
he was told he'd have to wear swimming trunks that he backed out...

Anyway I gave him this great format for a programme
Get 15 fat people on a Island and make them hunt for their food!
The one who loses the most weight wins the prize..everybody else
wins a new better looking self...

Can you imagine the sight of them with knives and forks in hand
chasing after dinner.... Wile E Coyote !   ;D

um ok wow, i might have to re-think my muqaddar-as-mujaahid-brewing-trouble position in light of this last exchange here ( ???) and some other post somewhere else, muqaddar, in which you said some kind of thing like never ever tell a woman the TRUTH?!  (ayyyyy......at least mujaahid would tone it down AFTER i discussed such things with him.  i think you're lookin to rev it up a notch.  are you just a troublemaker at heart??  ;) )

anyway, ignoring for now this eh hem typically british programme, i came back to tell that that little wasp got well enough and strong enough that she flew out the window, and is now happily outside somewhere, fat, full, and happy from her grapefest.  he he and the grape looks like a weirdly collapsed shrunken version of itself - she drained that thing.....

I learnt that lesson when i gave a female friend some 'advice'
she gave me some advice right back.... be careful how truthful you are
with women especially about their clothes !

anyway one of the lies that is forgiven is lying to keep your wife
 happy...   ;D
