I was just wondering where in the US do they have the biggest Muslim communities? Where would be the best place for a Muslim in Amerika to live?  8)

Hmmm....I don't live in the US but I know there's millions of muslims there and as far as I know there are muslims in every corner of the USA  ;D Personally, if I was moving there I'd like to live somewhere with a similar climate to England. I hear Seattle gets 9mths of rain a year, perfect place for me  8)

sis fatimah,

largest single population of muslims in the US is in detroit, michigan area, and second largest is houston, texas.  think all others are smaller, but there are LOTS of communities, especially in the south.  (and i'm sure someone else would be able to give you a current breakdown....)

but this raises a question i keep meaning to ask - why do muslims flock to cities?  makes no sense to me, if the overall objective is dawah.  why not establish smaller core population concentrations in cities, where people are often exposed to more diverse populations already, and do your work in all the non-city areas, where the majority of the population (in the US) lives, and where people are often way more isolated and have to often make more conscious effort to expose themselves to cultures and ideas and ways of life that are not the ones they themselves grew up in....

i find this puzzling.

and hee heee...to go on to talk about something i know only a little about, as i understand the spread of islam prior to realizing its societal pinnacle in andalusian spain, it was the wandering muslims who were most effective in reaching the largest numbers of people, and it was they who by their example alone often led people in far outlying areas, and in small towns spread all over, to see the possibility of another way of life.....

i just don't get this focus on cities......  why sequester yourselves?  go out and reach the people otherwise least likely to ever have the opportunity to know muslims or islam.....

Yeah Detroit, Houston, Chicago...the East Coast over the West Coast, forget the in-betweens :P  (I'm just kidding.)

In all seriousness, what do you mean by "best place"?  In terms of size of the community, yeah the aforementioned places are hyped out.  But, many people look for other things.  Including things that do not involve the Muslim Community at all.  Like for example, where do YOU have family, or can you stand the HEAT, or can you take that ACCENT (ugh), or do you need ACADEMIC institutions, etc etc.  (i have many more questions where those came from.)

And above all, why would you move to the states (pshhh!)  I would cross the border.  The southern border, that is -- I hear Cancun is kinda nice.

As to that.  I don't know if it is just Muslims.  People in general flock to cities.  The urban upbeat is easier to take.  And usually, forgive me if my logic is flawed, but metropolitan cities are known for their population??  In terms of sheer size, it would be a pity if there weren't Muslims in these major cities.

As a non-Amreekan resident.  If I were to move anywhere, it would have to be the East Coast.  Dirty Jersey, NY, VA, PA, MA.  Don't know, it just has charm.  Or Chicago, but only because the city lights are so sa-weet!  And now, Ladies and Gentlemen, I'll stop dreaming.  Good luck!

Wasalaam.

[slm],

Without telling where i exactly come from (not that i wouldn't want to tell all you great folks ;)), down here in the old south we got some great muslim communties! Livin in the south is mighty good... i lived down here me whole life...yep...and i promise i don't have no southern voice!!  Our little southern communties may be small in comparsion to Chicago or New York but they are still a real growing size!  ;)
I don't know what's all the bounce about the cities but here in south you have a little of everthing you got the big mountains and beaches on the other side, and a real homey feeling with everyone. I'd have to say the south beats all!!! ;) ;) :-/

wasalam,

Are you from Chicago?  Man.  My sister just got married (masha Allah) and moved there.  It's so nice there.  In terms of atmosphere, it is probably the best downtown I have ever seen.  Yes! It beats Manhattan, and (sadly enough) it even beats T.O.  If I ever get the chance, I'd love to do my Masters at the University of Chicago, insha Allah.  (Like I said, this is a dream...back to reality.)

Thanks for the replies.. I was looking for big muslim communities with halal stores, schools ect.. A place where I could see lots of muslims all around, not just in the masjid. I dont like big cities though.. So it seems the east coast is better than the west coast? Im from the west coast, but there wasn't a big community where I use to live...
Tell me more about Chicago!  :)
sure :) since I'm in the mood to write

it get really hot and humid in the summer, and really really cold in the winter. But we have a lot of thunderstorms which is great :) And you get to witness all four seasons the way they had them in your first grade sience book. Alhamdulilah

Chicago is really flat. Illiniois has NO hills... except for the former landfills which they've beautified.

Downtown Chicago runs along the shore of lake Michigan... before mankind got involved, the shore consisted of rocks mostly (I think) but now it has artificial beaches which they close down because of sewage problems... and big yucky cocrete barriers... the lake shore north of Chicago (starting from Evenston, the camups of North Western University and up) is nicer.

There's also the Chicago river (Chicago got its name cuz of the river which means "swamp of stinky onions" in a Native American language)... there are great big building along the river, and bridges which open up so the boats can go... People seem to like a tour of the river and the architecture.

Downtown Chicago has a lot of great buildings... glass and steal might and a lot of older friendlier buildings. It has a lot of good places to eat and a lot of cute things that the city has set up for tourists (navy pier, water tower, john hanckok observatory, sears tower, etc)... and their are great museaums too.

Chicago has a lot of great ethnic neighborhoods... and the city has recently started marketing these to tourists as well... you'll find a guide somewhere..

Chicago's trains are called the "L" short for elevated... since a lot of them are elavated above the street levels... its a great way to have a look around and meet good interesting people. It's also a great way to look at Chicago's racial segregation... north of downtown you'll see one color, south of downtown you'll see another.

Lately the city's been "gentrifying" so many people can't really afford the city anymore... a lot are moving here to the south south burbs (where I live). But now the city looks even more richer and snobbier, and a lot of people who would've otherwise lived in the burbs are moving to the city...

the University of Chicago is a beautiful (and very well-ranked) school in Chicago.. as is North Western... and there are many others that are quite good.

Chicago has at least seven full time Muslim schools, and a lot of big huge masajids, and many smaller ones. Quite a few Islamic organizations have their headquarters here (IQRA, Sound Vision, GRF, HLF, BIF, etc). And ISNA does a lot of conferences here... aside from the big convention, we have the annual education and community building conference, and others.

Oh and Indo-Pak people from all cornors of the country seem to know about Devon Ave. There's good food there and some good clothing stores. Everyother store is a Dollar Discount.

I don't know if Chicago is the "best place" to live... cuz I haven't lived anyother place, only lived in Nawabshah, Sindh, Pakistan, before here... and I've seen very few US cities... never been west of the Mississippi, or south of Macomb, IL. I did go to New York, but only saw it from a car window, and then from a house window (Chinatown looked really cool).

I guess I've sorta been trashing Chicago cuz I've been wanting to see other parts of this beautiful world lately... and I'm not sure if it is really my kinda town any more ;)
If I ever get the chance, I'd love to do my Masters at the University of Chicago
hey, me too :) It's in my long term plans, inshaAllah.

If you're into natural beauty, the west is the best.  For me, the east coast seems too cramped and urbanized.  I like the mountains, beaches, and wide open spaces the west offers.

The District of Columbia and it's out lying regions has plenty of halal stores and Mas-jids.  Crime and rent is high though.

wtg dirt,  while i have travelled much of the east coast and it has many beautiful spots it just doesn't compare to the west.  God has done some of his greatest works out here,  the east coast has nothing compared to Yosemite, Yellowstone, Zion and bryce canyon in utah  (what an incredible place southern utah is), Olympic natnl park and the drive up pch! (sorry for a very incomplete list. )

p.s.
New Zealand and Costa Rica are great places to if you like the outdoors.
