did anyone see that episode of 7th heaven that was on a few nights ago, i think on monday 8/5?  i know they usually try to incorporate different cultural, political, and religious figures, but it was the first time i had seen muslims on the show.  if anyone saw it, could you describe what you thought?  i barely caught the end of it, when ruthie refuses to be a part of the mass hate acts against yasmeen and her mom, nasreen...anyone go tthe scoop on what happened in the beginning and middle of the show?  were we protrayed correctly?

just curious...

I didn't see all of it, but my daughter (9 years old) was quite pleased about seeing a little muslima in hijab on television. She ran in with her bowl of ice cream and said, "A muslima is on 7th heaven! Finally, some Muslims on a TV show!" Then ran back in.

The part that I did see: Ruthie's friend Yasmeen was being teased and threatened by two teenagers who singled her out on the way to the local public school. Ruthie took Yasmeen home and hid her in the attic (with groceries, games and all the comforts of home).

Everyone finds them and the parents go to talk to the mother (very well presented.) The father was ill and neither Yasmeen nor her mother wanted to worry him. Ruthie's private school was suggested, with the typical results, the application was refused by board members, Ruthie makes impassioned speech, decides to leave the private school, goes to school with Yasmeen, everyone lives happily ever after.

With intriguing sub-plots of the older Camdens planning bodily harm to the boys (who the Camdens instead have arrested by the local gendarmes) and the circulation of a petition that no one wants to sign. "What! There are terrorists living in our neighborhood, and they have been here for how long?" Oh, and a Japanese woman who doesn't sign the petition because of fear, her family was taken to the internment camps we had here during Western War II.

I think 7th heaven did another show involving Muslims that I didn't see that had mother Camden speaking out from the pulpit in support of the oppressed women in Afghanistan. That came on in the winter some time. So there you have my synopsis. The show hopefully reminded people of the bigotry that we have grown here since before 1776 and since. (It's never too good to be too pleased with yourself. We tend to think we are the hope of the world.)

Salaam,

I didn't like the show that much...for some reason it all seemed "too" perfect to me. I felt that the acting was a bit too "happy go lucky"  However, it was a "good" piece of media in the sense that it cleared up some misconceptions...

I think that's how 7th heaven usually is  ;D
