Being recognised as muslim....

I received a letter from my old University today and those happy days triggered a memory. One day I was in the library and I spotted a friend I'd not seen for many years, in fact I was surprised that was there  :) Anyway, I walked up to him and greeted him with salaam. He looked a bit puzzled and then he said "Are you muslim?" The next response he gave was "Oh, sorry, I didn't think you looked muslim so I was wondering why you gave salaam."
Until that moment I never imagined that anyone could think I was anything but muslim  :D Then after some thinking, I figured out why he made that simple mistake. I was clean shaven, I had a stylish look ;D just like a hindu guy or even a "modern" sikh guy. To be honest, when I went to the uni mosque I'd see familiar faces and if they'd not stepped into the mosque I would not have thought they were muslim. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying that only the exterior counts I know full well that it is the actions and the sincerity of the heart that Allah looks at  8)
In today's day and age, is it important for you (the community) to be recognised as muslim? I've heard some people say that one should not keep beard etc because most non-muslims have a bad impression associated with it due to the Taleban and terrorists.  I
Czech republic is fine I suppose because 95% of foreign people living there are muslim  :D A muslim man who does not keep beard will still be recognised due to skin colour.
Isn't it more important considering the times we are in to stand out as muslims or are we just being provocative??
Excuse my stupidity if I didn't express my point of view in the correct manner, I'm still getting used to "talking" with my fingers  :)

[slm] bro ;-),

your question is a difficult one and almost philosophical in terms of looking at how being recognised as a muslim is a good thing or not.  therefore, it's hard to give any concrete answers.  But as a muslimah, my hijab serves its purpose to identify me as a muslim.  I'm happy for everyone to know that, even if i get a little self conscious at times. :)

However, the purpose of hijab is to please Allah as well as many other purposes (e.g. to dress modestly).  today's society may be more wary of muslims or hold a low opinion but that doesn't mean we should stop following our Islamic beliefs.

I hope that goes some way to answer your question.
