I got this message from a listserv i belong to. The sister lives in upstate NY so I thought you all can possibly help her out  :)

Assalamu Aleikum
I have been part of this e-group for awhile, though I do not usually
post...I like to read and learn.
I am developing a class for women reverts to Islam. I need to find an
Arabic Instructor for it. My goal is to have the ladies be able to
know the alphabet, their sounds, their connections, and begin to read
the Qur'an with the assistance of an Arabic Instructor.
I am in Upstate New York. If there are any people who would like to
teach that part of the class (only short 15-20 minute lessons at a
time), please contact me.

Sorry about that, hehe, i didn't claim to actually know what she meant by upstate ny, i'm not even sure what that includes, but mwishka was kind enough to clue me in that she's prolly near New Paltz according to her area code.

looks like the old "does the term upstate exist except in the minds of downstate people" debate is still raging on!!   :D

most of NY state, which gets called "upstate" doesn't even acknowledge the term, THAT'S the funniest part of it.  albany has "upstate medical center" to designate that tthe downstate people are the ones who matter - they do have all the wealth after all, and then there are all the wealthy people up in the adirondacks who think downstate is a country folk term for new york city, and upstate is a country folk term for their (often luxury) "cabins" at lake george, etc.   it is a RIDICULOUS language problem.

i go with the people who just ignore it and pretend the two terms don't exist.  (i use...can you believe this?  northern, eastern, western, central, and southern, and sometimes "the new york city area", plus long island gets its own identity...)

those terms are ludicrous --- they grew out of the rich NYC people who vacationed all over quaint NY state in the 20s and 30s, as a joke version of the "uptown"/"downtown" terminology.  it's actually sort of an ugly, divisive, and classist terminology to me - that's the real reason i don't use it.  who, the city people get to say all the rural people are inconsequential in the world?!  not when i'm around is anybody going to make someone invisible like that!

mwishka to the fray, again!

(oh man, sometimes she thinks she's mighty mouse or something.......defender of the downtrodden and unfortunate.. ::) give us a break, mouse.... )
