Box 20716 Columbus, OH 43220 ========== LETTER FROM THE REPUBLICAN PARTY: VOTE IN THE DEMOCRATIC PRIMARY, UNSEAT MCKINNEY Below is the text of a letter sent by Audrey Morgan of the Georgia Republican Party to those Republicans in the Fourth District. It shows how desperate the Majette camp is getting. The Republicans are calling their affiliates to vote DEMOCRAT! What a strange marriage… Dear Friends: Re: Fourth District Congressional Race I hope you have been following the "Good News" in the Majette/McKinney race. A recent poll puts Denise Majette at 43% and Cynthia McKinney at 39% of the votes with 6% undecided. The political pundits call this a "dead heat" and, in fact, in Majette's favor as an incumbent should not be in this trailing position. McKinney is on the defensive and pulling all of her usual "incendiary tactics that usually work" of race-baiting, name-calling, and misrepresentation. If you feel as I do that we need a responsible and respected person representing us in Congress, this is our best opportunity to make a change. Jim Wooten's editorial of August 4th in the AJC [refers to American JewishCongress], copy enclosed, tells us what we need to do. MAJETTE NEEDS OUR HELP TO WIN! * VOTE IN THE DEMOCRATIC PRIMARY (at least this one time) * ENCOURAGE EVERYONE YOU KNOW TO VOTE FOR DENISE MAJETTE I believe Majette is our best opportunity to get responsible representation for our district. Think about the alternative… If we don't do anything we can in the next two weeks to help Majette win then Cynthia McKinney will have a lifetime hold on this job. Best Regards Audrey Morgan [Note: No need to comment!] ======= GA. CHALLENGER LEADS FUNDRAISING Washington Post, August 12, 2002 The money chase in the Aug. 20 Democratic primary between Rep. Cynthia McKinney (Ga.) and former state judge Denise Majette is heating up, according to recently filed federal election reports. Majette, who has capitalized on McKinney's controversial remarks about the Middle East and on her suggestion that President Bush ignored warnings of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, has amassed more than $1 million in her campaign treasury, compared with McKinney's $615,000. In the first week of August, Majette raised $180,000, compared with McKinney's $25,000. ====== FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE CONTACT: BILL BANKS, 404-243-5574 Monday, August 12, 2002 MCKINNEY WINS DEBATE Majette flip-flops on affirmative action (Friday, August 09, 2002) Representative Cynthia McKinney trounced opponent Denise Majette in an Atlanta Press Club debate scheduled at 7:30, August 9, 2002 at the Georgia Public Television studios (channel 8 in Atlanta). In a debate that focused on Representative McKinney's record in Congress and Majette's record as a judge, McKinney won on both fronts. During the debate a reporter from the Atlanta Journal Constitution challenged Majette, saying that in a prior interview Majette said she opposed affirmative action, but in a meeting of African American professionals, Majette changed course and said she supported affirmative action. Majette refused to address this flip-flop on affirmative action. In McKinney's closing statement, McKinney accurately pointed out that Majette flip-flopped on affirmative action. When the focus turned to Majette's record of abusing her power and denying innocent people of their constitutional rights as a judge, McKinney posed a simple question that Majette could not answer. McKinney: "Did you ever lie about or hide the existence of trial transcripts to cover up your mistakes as a judge that could have deprived innocent people of their rights?" When Majette denied the allegation, McKinney reminded Majette that her own court reporter directly contradicted what she just said . . . before she was fired by Majette. McKinney then revealed the smoking gun: a March 20, 1998 document from Majette's court reporter to the party requesting the court transcripts that Majette sought to deny from them. McKinney read the full document as follows: "Per your request for the transcript in State vs. Hamilton, I was the court reporter, I was present on January 20, 1998, I took down all proceedings in court including yours. I also took down the sentencing from a prior date in this case. However, I was instructed by Judge Majette that 'there is no transcript in the case.' So, I can't provide a transcript at this time. Sorry." "Majette's own spokesperson said Majette would answer McKinney's questions at the debate. What happened? That didn't sound like an answer to me?" said McKinney Campaign Manager Bill Banks. Majette also failed to answer McKinney's other question. McKinney: "I would like to know why you can have thousands of dollars of your own money invested in prescription drug companies and why you support the drug industry's legislation that will continue to allow them to abuse Georgia families with high prices for prescription drugs?" McKinney successfully asserted her status as an effective and influential member of Congress: "I've brought home over $350 million dollars in federal grants for many very important programs for better health care, education, affordable housing and to help senior citizens," McKinney said after the debate. McKinney also put to rest the negative lies and distortions about her record by opponent Majette. "Georgians value truth, and dismiss the negative campaign of Denise Majette," McKinney said after the debate. To give an accurate picture of her record in congress, McKinney encouraged viewers to watch a short film her campaign prepared about her record in Congress. "If you want to know the truth," McKinney said during the debate, "tune in tomorrow at 11:30am on Channel 69." From: [e-mail withheld for privacy] Sent: Wednesday, August 07, 2002 11:54 PM Subject: Campaign for Cynthia McKinney-final days Friends of Justice in the Middle East: The next ten days may be the most crucial we have seen for influencing US government policy toward Israel and Palestine. I call on you for further support for Rep. Cynthia McKinney of Georgia in her August 20 primary contest with a candidate heavily supported by AIPAC (American Israel Public Affairs Committee). If AIPAC unseats McKinney, our most forceful advocate in Congress, it can ensure its domination of US foreign policy for years to come. I apologize for possible multiple postings. But I urge you to pass this message on, or a message in your own words, to any listservs supporting justice for Palestine on which you have not already seen this or a similar message. Newspapers report that Arab-Americans across the country are supporting McKinney, but, as a Jew, Israeli citizen, and former IDF soldier, I urge Jews of conscience, as well as Christians for Middle East Peace, Buddhists, and all patriotic Americans who support freedom and democracy equally for all people, to support this cause Cynthia McKinney has repeatedly stood up for us: against sanctions on Iraq, for enforcement of the arms export control act that would limit military aid for Israel, and against government detention of unindicted suspects under the "patriot act." We should now stand up for her and help her defeat AIPAC. For the 2002 primary elections, AIPAC targeted two African-American congressmen who have consistently voted against pro-Israel resolutions, Earl Hilliard of Alabama and Cynthia McKinney of Georgia. Rep. Hilliard was defeated in his primary battle in June. Rep. McKinney is being challenged by another African American woman. Local polls show that the race is now a dead heat. Both candidates have raised unprecedented sums of money, but McKinney's staff believed last week that her opponent had raised about one million dollars to McKinney's $600,000. Why is this one congressional race so crucial? Resolutions supporting Israel and condemning the Palestinian authority consistently pass both houses of Congress with about 90% of the vote. My own Congressman voted May 2 for the execrable H. Res. 392, "Expressing Solidarity with Israel in its Fight Against Terrorism." He did this even though he probably is as knowledgeable of Israel and Palestine as most of us. He said that he "had" to vote for H Res 392, although it was a bad resolution. Why Congressmen "had" to vote for H Res 392 can be inferred from a report by Akiva Eldar in the leading Israeli newspaper, HaAretz, July 9, 2002, on a speech by President Bush July 2, in which Bush caved in completely to Ariel Sharon's demands: "(Israeli) Foreign Ministry analysts, who have spoken with dozens of American politicians, pollsters and columnists, have come to the conclusion that the Jewish vote, and Jewish money, have more influence on U.S. policy toward the conflict than anything else, and the influence extends all the way to Bush's speech. . . . Jewish money in the last elections constituted two-thirds of all contributions to the Democrats. . AIPAC has what is generally considered the largest database of private donors. According to the Foreign Ministry's analysis, that data was much more in the forefront of Bush's thinking on Tuesday than the latest terror attacks in Israel and the hunger in Gaza." AIPAC dollars have flooded the campaigns of challengers to Congressmen critical of Israel over the years, leading to the defeats of several, including Senator William Fulbright. We have now a splendid chance to break the stranglehold that AIPAC has on Congress, but we must act swiftly, this week. A thousand people contributing an average $100 each would be $100,000, enough to give the McKinney campaign a major boost. If Cynthia McKinney is defeated, we all are defeated. If she wins, it will be a historic victory for efforts to have a just US foreign policy. Even if we have donated before, let us do it again. Send whatever you can - $10, $100, but no more than $1000 per individual ($2000 for a couple). If you donate more than $200 you must give the name of your employer (federal law). DO NOT SEND MONEY TO ME. Whittington and Chris Cillizza Roll Call, August 12, 2002 State Judge Denise Majette raised more than six times as much as Rep. Cynthia McKinney (D-Ga.) last month, according to new reports filed with the Federal Election Commission, closing what had been a huge gap in resources. The financial mismatch was by far the most striking among House campaigns in the Peach State, although most of the other competitive Aug. 20 primaries in the state are open seat races. Majette, who ended June with just $99,000 in the bank, raised $489,000 in July and reported $196,000 in cash on hand at the beginning of August. She also spent almost the same amount as McKinney during the period, doling out $393,000 in the month. Since the beginning of August, Majette reported raising another almost $140,000. McKinney, meanwhile, raised $79,000 in July and reported $141,000 in her war chest at the end of last month after spending just over $400,000 in July. An independent poll conducted late last month showed Majette with a slim lead over the incumbent, reinforcing the results of a poll released by Majette in May. Bob Doyle, a consultant to the challenger's campaign, described the money flowing to her coffers as "further evidence of Cynthia McKinney being on the ropes. "The fundraising numbers are evidence that our message is working and that Cynthia McKinney, her days are numbered," said Doyle. "I think people in Georgia have had enough of her over-the-top comments in Congress." But Bill Banks, McKinney's campaign manager, said the race is about Majette's "abysmal" record as a state court judge. He also suggested that reports that there is a movement among Republicans to support Majette may backfire. "Here's a lady who's been selected by conservative factions," he said. The increasingly bitter 4th district race, pitting two black women against each other for a safe Democratic seat, has drawn obvious comparisons to another primary contest decided in Alabama earlier this year. Attorney Artur Davis beat five-term Rep. Earl Hilliard (Ala.) in a Democratic runoff after their positions on the situation in the Middle East helped provide both candidates with an infusion of out-of-state money in the campaign's final months. But both campaigns' strategists in the Georgia race sought to downplay any similarities between the two contests. Doyle noted that 70 percent of Majette's contributions are from in-state sources, although the figure indicates a drop from the 90 percent estimate the campaign touted through the end of June. Banks, meanwhile, said that while Davis had run against Hilliard before, Majette has "never run for any elected office." Both campaigns, however, have received PAC contributions from organizations aligned with each side of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict. Many of the same political action committees that supported Davis have given money to Majette, while McKinney has received contributions from similar interest groups that backed Hilliard, such as the Arab American Leadership PAC. McKinney has continued to attack Majette's record on the bench in radio and television ads. Majette, meanwhile, has responded with ads that say McKinney's negative attacks are just the latest example of her going too far. McKinney has made controversial comments on foreign policy matters as well as the post-Sept. 11 war on terrorism. Meanwhile, support for McKinney, like Hilliard, has poured in from many of her colleagues in the Democratic Caucus and the Congressional Black Caucus. While 14 Members sent checks from their campaign accounts in July and early August, Democratic Caucus Chairman Martin Frost (Texas) gave McKinney $5,000 from his leadership PAC. Majette's latest reports showed she has not benefited from any Members' contributions, other than a $1,000 check from Sen. Zell Miller (D-Ga.) in June, but she has gotten the attention of at least one luminary in the state. According to her pre-primary report, Majette has received a $1,000 contribution from Henry "Hank" Aaron, owner of Hank Aaron BMW in Atlanta and Major League Baseball's all-time home run leader.
