Can anyone tell me about UN resolutions? |

[slm] I am looking for an exact amount of UN resolutions which Israel has ignored, refused, and disobeyed. Can anyone give me an exact record AND a credible reference? Any help would be greatly appreciated. [wlm] |

"His Majesty's Government view with favour the establishment in Palestine of a national home for the Jewish people, and will use their best endeavours to facilitate the achievement of this object, it being clearly understood that nothing shall be done which may prejudice the civil and religious rights of existing non-Jewish communities in Palestine, or the rights and political status enjoyed by Jews in any other country." I should be grateful if you would bring this declaration to the knowledge of the Zionist Federation. Yours sincerely, Arthur James Balfour ============================================================ Some history since then, up to sabra and shatilla: Apparently..... in 1897 the First Zionist Congress declared Palestine the Jewish Homeland and developed a structure of government which could be transferred to Palestine at some future time. In 1915-16 Britain promised to create an Arab kingdom in exchange for war support. 1916 there was a secret British-French agreement to divide the post war Middle East between them. In 1917 Britain promised the Jews a "national home" in Palestine in exchange for war support. >From 1922 Britain ruled Palestine Jordan and Iraq under League of Nations Mandates and France ruled Syria and Lebanon. After 3 years of Palestinian uprising against Britain in 1939 Britain proposed partition of Palestine and expulsion of 250,000 Palestinians. WW2 many Jews who survive the holocaust look to Palestine for refuge. From1944 to 1947 Jewish groups in Palestine try to expel the British, many British soldiers and Arab civilians are killed. 1947 Britain cannot bring peace so turns the matter over to UN. Res 181 partition of Palestine into Jewish and Palestinian states, fighting begins between Jews and Palestinians, many Palestinians become refugees. 1948 With Britain out the Jews proclaim a Jewish state. Palestine Egypt Jordan Syria Iraq and Lebanon engage in war to stop partition, creation of a Jewish state and Israeli expansion into the proposed Palestinian area. Israeli units defeat combined Arab armies. wow. 48-50 Out of 1,200,000 Palestinians in the mandate at least 725,000 are driven from their homes or flee the fighting. Only 160,000 remain in "Israel" which government allows only a few to return when the war is over. By 1950 over a million live in UN supported refugee camps. In 1956 Britain France and Israel attack Egypt, Israel seizes Sinai Peninsula, then has to give it back after US and USSR insist. 1967 Israel crushes Egypt Jordan Syria, captures Sinai peninsula Gaza Strip Golan province West Bank and East Jerusalem. About 250,000 more Palestinian refugees flee or are forced into Jordan and more Palestinians are under Israeli rule. 1973 Egypt and Syria attempt to regain lost territories, they push Israel back in the Sinai peninsula and Golan province. A massive airlift of US arms to Israel tips the balance in Israel's favour. 1974 Yasser Arafat speaks to UN calling for a united Palestine with a democratic secular government where Christian Jew and Muslim live in justice, equality and fraternity (including all Jews who live there). 1977 Menachem Begin becomes prime minister advocating a Greater Israel including West Bank Gaza and possibly Jordan with unlimited settlement of Jews in Arab populated areas under Israeli occupation 1978 Camp David. Israel invades Lebanon seizing land up to the Litani River and sets up puppet government of the South Lebanese Army. 1982 Israel invades Lebanon occupying much of the country up to Beirut. After US brokers a withdrawal of PLO fighters and Arafat's staff, Israel massacres unarmed refugees inSabra and Shatilla. ========================================================== C. 529. Communiqué au Conseil et aux Membres de la Société Genève, le 12 août 1922. __________ LEAGUE OF NATIONS _______ MANDATE FOR PALESTINE ________ LEAGUE OF NATIONS* MANDATE FOR PALESTINE ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Article 2 The Mandatory shall be responsible for placing the country under such political, administrative and economic conditions as will secure the establishment of the Jewish national home, as laid down in the preamble, and the development of self-governing institutions, and also for safeguarding the civil and religious rights of all the inhabitants of Palestine, irrespective of race and religion. Article 9 The Mandatory shall be responsible for seeing that the judicial system established in Palestine shall assure to foreigners, as well as to natives, a complete guarantee of their rights. Respect for the personal status of the various peoples and communities and for their religious interests shall be fully guaranteed. In particular, the control and administration of Wakfs shall be exercised in accordance with religious law and the dispositions of the founders. Article 15 The Mandatory shall see that complete freedom of conscience and the free exercise of all forms of worship, subject only to the maintenance of public order and morals, are ensured to all. No discrimination of any kind shall be made between the inhabitants of Palestine on the ground of race, religion or language. No person shall be excluded from Palestine on the sole ground of his religious belief. The right of each community to maintain its own schools for the education of its own members in its own language, while conforming to such educational requirements of a general nature as the Administration may impose, shall not be denied or impaired. Article 26 The Mandatory agrees that, if any dispute whatever should arise between e Mandatory and another Member of the League of Nations relating to the interpretation or the application of the provisions of the mandate, such dispute, if it cannot be settled by negotiation, shall be submitted to the Permanent Court of International Justice provided for by Article 14 of the Covenant of the League of Nations. Article 27 The consent of the Council of the League of Nations is required for any modification of the terms of this mandate. Article 28 In the event of the termination of the mandate hereby conferred upon the Mandatory, the Council of the League of Nations shall make such arrangements as may be deemed necessary for safeguarding in perpetuity, under guarantee of the League, the rights secured by Articles 13 and 14, and shall use its influence for securing, under the guarantee of the League, that the Government of Palestine will fully honour the financial obligations legitimately incurred by the Administration of Palestine during the period of the mandate, including the rights of public servants to pensions or gratuities. The present instrument shall be deposited in original in the archives of the League of Nations and certified copies shall be forwarded by the Secretary-General of the League of Nations to all Members of the League. Salaam Alaikum Here is the link to the UN webpage that has every UN reslolution (from all different branches of the UN ie Security Economic etc) concerning Israel. There is probably over 5,000 resolutions there. For quick references though probabaly the most important are 198 242 338 which deal with the settlement and the occupation itself. Also the Universal Declaration of Human rights which states that any refugee must have the oppurtunity to return to their homeland or reciieve compensation for those choosing not to return for land stolen from them. here is the web link to the resolutions www.un.org/Depts/dpa/qpalnew/resolutions_new_qpal.htm also a good fact sheet about the occupation and international law can be found at www.palesinemonitor.org I hope i have been helpfull also feel free to email me at yunusfiske@yahoo.com I can send you a bunch of facts about us aid the occupation and international law concerning Israel |
