Bismillah and salam,

What would your answer to this question be:

after giving many examples of bad muslims: "I find it hard to believe that anyone could consider this "Muslim" a better human being than the best Christian.

I really cannot understand how Allah could state that
the worst Muslim (a father who murders his child, for
example) is better than Mother Theresa, for example. Who contributes
more to society?"

Bismillah and salam,

Yes sister Kathy that was what i thought at first perhaps they are not. I am not in direct contact with this lady. A friend of mine known her through writing. Anyways, I am not sure how exactly this situation arised. I think that she was hurt as new muslim by the muslim husband who was bad. And when she was shaky people told her it is a greater degree to be a muslim. that the christians and jews will not be happy with you till you leave the islam (the aya she refered to it earlier in the email) and they might've said it is the lowest creatures who see the truth and deny it.

I think it could've gone a better way but this is where it is.

And i am not too sure and that is why i ask, isn't it true though? that according to hadeeth that if a true believer commits a sin (can't remember what the sin is, i think lying and zina), it is in that moment only he is not a true believer? Also, isn't better to believe in Allah not deny him even if we make mistakes, then to deny the truth? don't our efforts and good works sometimes in vain if we are not clear in intention as well as itiba3? Doesn't it matter that ultimately all the monotheist muslims will not remain in eternal hell fire if they are to be punished?

Anyhow even though i really want to know how you guys would answer teh question and what you think of it...i don't plan on approaching it this way. i will probably quote this from dr. zakir naik:

we can’t judge Islam by its followers. If you want to judge how good Islam is then judge it according to its authentic sources, i.e. the Glorious Qur’an and the Sahih Hadith. 5. Judge Islam by its best follower i.e. Prophet Mohammed (pbuh): If you practically want to check how goo` a car is put an expert driver behind the steering wheel. Similarly the best and the most exemplary follower of Islam by whom you can check how good Islam is, is the last and final messenger of God, Prophet Muhammad (pbuh). Besides Muslims, there are several honest and unbiased non-Muslim historians who have acclaimed that prophet Muhammad was the best human being. According to Michael H. Hart who wrote the book, ‘The Hundred Most Influential Men in History’, the topmost position, i.e. the number one position goes to the beloved prophet of Islam, Muhammad (pbuh). There are several such examples of non-Muslims paying great tributes to the prophet, like Thomas Carlyle, La-Martine, etc.

As for the other part..i might just say it is not up to us to judge who is better in the eyes of Allah but we know that tawhid is the right path and how well we practice or we don't we are also accountable for it. Nothing gets lost with Allah.

I welcome any suggestions to improve the answer.

assalaamu alaikum

I think the worst Muslim (i.e. a believer in tawhid, person who prays salah, etc.) is better than the best kaafir.

If you take the example you give, a father who is a murderer of his children is a very evil person without any question, yet he still stands the chance that he may make a repentance great enough which Allah will accept:

"Surely Allah does not forgive that anything should be associated with Him, and forgives what is besides that to whomsoever He pleases; and whoever associates anything with Allah, he devises indeed a great sin." 4:48

However, Mother Theresa despite the acts of kindness and charity she performed has failed the big test... THE test.

A failure whereby she will be veiled from her Lord on the D/Judgment, and although the above verse is sufficient as a proof (for me) to point to her end, just to add a little more. If i remember correctly Mother Theresa (Catholic) spent her whole life making shirk with Allah, and saying a statement which has near calamitous effects for the inhabitants of the Earth:

"And they say: 'The Most Beneficent (Allâh) has begotten a son.' Indeed you have brought forth a terrible evil thing, whereby the heavens are almost torn, and the earth is split asunder, and the mountains fall in ruins, that they ascribe a son  to the Most Beneficent (Allâh).  But it is not suitable for (the Majesty of) the Most Beneficent (Allâh) that He should beget a son." 19:88-92

As a Muslim its easier to understand this concept. I think the approach you've mentioned of Dr. Naik is a good one.

Wa Salaam

PS I don't mean to definitively say that Mother Theresa is going to Paradise/Hell, because she might have some excuse before Allah which allows her to receive pardon. However, generally, we know that the disbelievers won't be in Paradise.
