Message to Islamic Workers Everywhere

Asalamualaikum wa rahmatallahi wa barakatu,

Jazahullahu khairan, Imam Zaid gave a lecture last night on the
topic of Institution Building, in which he plotted the roadmap
for Muslims to have an instrumental impact on this society within
the coming years. His words are timely, coming at a time when
Muslims are questioning what we can do as we find ourselves
powerless to effect any influence in an increasingly hostile
societal backdrop.

Please take the time to listen, as Imam Zaid spells out a vision
of the future for Islamic workers and MSAs, providing guidance
amidst the confusion.

How do you feel about Imam Zaid's comments about the influence that is held within MSA's by ' movements which have failed overseas'

It seemed like he was judging success and failure by the number of adhereants to those movements... when we look at the example of our prophets we know how much rejection they faced.

I think a better attempt should be made at understanding the different groups which exist in different countries. (and the impact they have had!)

I agree though that no one group should have control over an MSA or MSA national, but i didnt agree with what Imam Zaid said about Islamic Movements overseas being failures simply because they havent attained political power.. (the effort we put in is what we will be judged by, the results are up to Allah).

I enjoyed the rest of the speech though, (please don't critisize me for critisizing)

Allah (S) gave us minds and hearts for a reason, dont expect me to blindly follow anyone.

salam,

please give taffi a big salam from us, we miss her!!!

I think we'd have to look at it on a per case basis. What is that group's goals and have they succeeded in obtaining them. ie HT's main goal is khilafah..don't think we have that yet.. Ikhwan's main goal? dawah i think has been a runaway success in certain places in chaning the socio-political structures...

but what i think he was trying to say is that we cannot import a movement from somewhere else and expect it to work here, we need to develop our own...

I dont want to get into discussing HT....

but if you speak to the brothers/sisters from an Ikhwaani background, or read the book milestones.. you see that there is an understanding that strategies from one part of the world, wont neesarily be 'plug and play' and may not work in another part.

Like mawlana Maududi (rahimullah) said.. “It is important for an Islamic worker to be able to evaluate the situation of the society he is in. Once that evaluation is made, he then can establish an effective method to implement his strategy.”

I spoke to some of the founding members of ICNA and they told me that when they established some islamic work here, (before they made ICNA) they called Syed Maududi and they asked him if we should start a Jamaat-e-islami branch here.. and he said no, you understand your situation better than anyone, we cant sit here and make decisions for you.(paraphrased- dont quote me)

the point is that people from an Ikhwaan backgrond would agree that; people need to adopt strategies according to what situation they are in, but this doesnt mean that we can not learn from other's experiences. I just didnt like the way he (imam zaid) passed them off as failures, many contend that Banna, Mawdudi were the Mujaddid' of thier era... just look at the impact that they have had on those regions of the muslim world. Thousands if not millions of muslims are practicing thier deen and working for higher goals as a result of the work of thier movements.

And also their movements have stood the test of time, and are still running and are very strong....(which proves they were not personality based)

Also while Imam Zaid was talking about this he said all the groups have divided up the muslims.... Islam allows difference of opinion, and for people to adopt various methodologies based on their understanding of Islam, I beleieve theres article posted on this board from Sheikh Salman Al Awdah.. I believe its titled...'Unity of Purpose, Not Uniformity of Opinion '  The reason i mention this is because.. why would.. they stop thier work and just join with other groups which do not follow the same methodology. Ex. HT they want to build the khilafah, and hope that there will be a trickle down effect and effect all muslims, while others want to strengthen the muslims so they can build that khilafah... so his point didnt make sense to me at all.

If you look at chapter 2 of the book Witnesses unto Mankind. Mawlana Mawdudi explains the difference between a group and a sect, I think all muslims should understand that difference.

Again I agreed with Imam Zaid's overall point (that no MSA should be controlled by any group)... but i disagreed with what he said about how these are the same groups which have 'failed' overseas.

About Ikhwaans goal it is to establish islam as complete way of life in all the arenas of life (social, economical, political etc.) starting with the self, then the family, then the society. It is not simply to re-establish the Khilafah or something as limited as that.

I think i have some notes from a lecture given by Sheikh Shaker El Sayed (form MAS) ill try to find them inshallah

I hope everyone views this is an healthy discussion... I know alot of people who are not ready to discuss and jump on people and say "how dare you say that.. hes a sheikh and you are not..."
