THE first Herbal and Traditional Islamic Medicine (Tib Al Nabawi) Institute will open in Sharjah on September 25.

The students who have memorised the entire Holy Quran, will be exempted from the admission and study fees in the institute. Midhat Amin, Executive Director and Head of Research at the Institute, told Khaleej Times that a student must hold a secondary school certificate and should preferably be a scholar of Suna to be eligible for admission to the institute.

The institute charges Dh1,000 per month for full time students and Dh500 for part-time students and for those studying with the institute via the Internet. After two years of study at the institute, a student will receive an internationally-recognised diploma in herbal medicine. The institute is located close to Kuwaiti Hospital in Sharjah.

Ahmad Hilmi, Media Relations Director, said that the institute is the first of its kind in the emirate and has been licensed. The institute, he said, has a competent staff of doctors, pharmacists and herbalists.

"Among the books that students will study is Al Tib Al Nabawi, a book by Ibn Al Qayem (a Muslim scholar). The comprehensive curriculum includes courses on dissection and human anatomy as well as a detailed study on the uses of each herb found in various parts of the Arab world and their uses in treating ailments," Mr Hilmi said, adding that students will also be given books of Ibn Sina and Abu Bakr Al Razi to study and the material will be delivered in a way easy to understand.

The founder and Director of the new institute, Mohammed Ezat Mohammed Aref, attained expertise in herbal science from the Shaikh Zayed Complex for Herbal Medicine Research at Mafraq.
