as salaamu alaykum wa rahmatAllah,

I was waiting for other people to post their thoughts, but I'll kick things off inshaAllah..

Alhamdulillah, as always, ISNA was an *overwhelming* experience, one that has its negatives and its positives.. and as always, the good definitely outweighed the bad, and it was an experience I walked away from inspired and motivated to become better, and with the desire to do more for the deen :-)

what I thought was awesome about the conference:

-- the location.. in the heart of D.C., a few blocks down from chinatown (not that I would know anything about that ;)) .. an awesome change from the Rosemont Convention Center in the middle of *nowhere* Illinois, where Pepsi was two bucks a bottle and food was ridiculously expensive :P

--  the "Islam 101" workshop with Imam Zaid Shakir and Sr. Maha el-Genaidy from the Islamic Networks Group.. a good presentation about the importance of building Islamic institutions, and practical suggestions on how to implement an institution of daawa in your local area (ie, a Muslim Speakers Bureau with qualified, trained people to talk to non-muslim audiences)..  great stuff and awesome resources :)

--  the "Humanizing the Other" session with Dr. Abdul Hakeem Jackson, Umar Faruq Abdullah, Hamza Yusuf.. I think this was *the* best session I attended this year.. a critical but awesome look at how Muslims have bastardized the work 'kafir'; and how this has manifested itself in how we live and practice our Islam.  I'm *really* happy to see Dr. Jackson back on the ISNA scene, walhamdulillah ;D

--  the "Jihad vs. Terrorism" session with Imam Zaid Shakir, Hamza Yusuf, Ingrid Matteson, Tariq Ramadan.. they ROCKED the house mashaAllah, and c-span too 8)

-- Qiyaam ul layl with Sh. Muhammad ash-Shareef on Sunday night.. woow.. an incredibly awesome ending to the conf for me walhamdulillah :)

Unfortunately I missed out on some things because I was working security for MSA.. I missed some workshops on writing with Yahiya Emerick and Rukhsana Khan that looked really awesome.. and also missed out on the sisters entertainment Saturday night, and the family entertainment Sunday night.. for those of you who attended, how were they?

Working security for MSA was a *wild* experience.. it was definitely a test of patience and I have a lot of sympathy for the ansaar now, hehe.. may Allah reward them :)

Other things that were different this year:

the bag checks/metal detectors were an (understandably) new thing.. they were cool with me.. I'd rather wait in line for ten minutes than have some crazy person walk in and start taking people out..

It also seemed like there was a lot more specialization in the parallel sessions.. there were different sessions on political activism, local community development, daawa, gobal relief efforts, etc.. I think this goes to show how we're developing as a community..  it was also cool because you got to pick and choose the sessions that were most appealing to your own personal interests.

The lobby scene was crazy as usual.. more than one speaker mentioned it in their lecture, which I think shows that it's a growing problem.. but the fact that it was addressed in some lectures was a positive sign for me, about ISNA's leadership.. it was a very different approach from last year's "those kids in the lobby have nothing to do with us!  ISNA is not responsible for them" etc disclaimer..

Something that I found odd was that a lot of the speakers -- Imam Zaid, Dr. Tariq Ramadan, etc -- were just walking around the conference site, chilling, lounging, even attending sessions, with what seemed like no entourage.  It was kinda cool, because I had the opportunity to talk to a couple of them ;D but again this was something I hadn't seen before.

The bazaar was huuuuuuggggggeeee.. and I never found the time to get through more than two aisles at a time :)  I got some awesome books and tapes.. Sh. Anwar al-Awlaqi's new "Hereafter" series and Dawud Wharnsby Ali's "the Prophet's Hands".. awesome stuff mashaAllah :)

whew, I think I've said more than enough.  Who's next? :)

wasalaamu alaykum :-)

slm,

man.. alhamdulillah isna was awesome! even though there werent as many people there as when its in chicago, it was still packed... i dont have the patience to type out a whole summary of the whole weekend, but i will say that it was awesome to listen to some awesome speakers and sessions, relieve myself of some spending money in the bazaar :P and to meet a *lot* of people... and to hang out with old friends and just get to spend a weekend in the presence of such a huge number of muslims all in one place... subhanallah.. ive been going to isna every year since i was 2, and i love it more and more each year 8)

oh and for those of you that were there, one of the best highlights of the weekend was sunday evening of the film festival.. Women In Black was by far one of the funniest movies ive seen before :D and The Choice was also awesome mashallah.

*sigh*... on monday i was feelin all depressed cause it was all over and i had to go home the next day :( but alhamdulillah the whole weekend was well worth it, and im definitely looking forward to next year, when it will be held in Chicago again inshallah  ;D :-/ :)

Could someone insha'allah clarify the issue of the FBI recruiting?  Were a lot of ppl signing up?  It's actually the logical thing for them to do, now that the masajid are infiltrated.

rasheed i don't think it was the FBI but the military service.. they had that last year too pre 9/11.  there are actually alot of muslims in the military and alot of muslims that join the military (whether that's right or not), they probably see it as a good potential minority group. i think the booth got alot of disgusted looks this year, last year it was just an amusing sideshow...

btw what books and stuff did people get?? maybe i can order them!!! and how was that sisters fashion show.. what was in it??? [bros don't look ;)]

slm,

I am actually not qualified on reviewing this year's conference from a practical perspective...I hadn't seen my family in months and so I spent most of the weekend trying to chill with my parents and siblings as  much as possible.  BUT, I did get to do a few cool things.  I was volunteering in the Media Relations group, so I got to show some news people around--mainly just Al-Jazeera...They interviewed me too! That was kind of cool.  Alhamdulillah, there were soo many news outlets there.  As others mentioned, CSPAN covered the conference pretty extensively Alhmadulillah.  Even days after the conference was over, you could catch some of the lectures on their channel.   I watched Dr.Ingrid Mattison speak, and she was very well-spoken Alhamdulillah.  She is an ISNA board member and convert to Islam.

The ladies entertainment/fashion show was well-organized, Alhamdulillah--though they didn't model as many fancy schmancy beautiful wedding clothes like they did last year :(
The ISNA entertainment on sunday was pretty good.  They had a comedian who was actually pretty funny, and Native Deen performed..which was awesome as usual Alhamdulillah :)  And then they had this Raihan type group from Malaysia perform a few songs which were good as well.

The bazaar was great! 4 hijabs for $10!!!!! you can't beat that, Alhamdulillah :)  And Zain Bhika has a new CD--Faith that is really good!

Did everyone see the booth for our Masjid?? ADAMS center?  It's being built now, and just yesterday the unfinished structure was vandalized :(  Some folks spray panted obscenities and swastikas on the outer walls....  It's sad.

Anyways, this ISNA was different from most in the sense that it was very America/politics oriented due of course to 9/11.  There were a lot of lectures based on explaining "terrorism", foreign policy, etc...so that was good, especially because of all the media present.

Alright, take care,
wassalam,
Nazia

This was actually me first ISNA experienced:) It was awesome Mashaallah!I was really psyched to be amongst sooo many Muslims in one setting:) I think the only major negative thing that threw me off was the infamous "lobby scene" :) but otherwise Alhamdullillah, I thoroughly enjoyed the sessions, bazaar, etc.
I also got the Prophet's hands, Purification of the heart tape series by hamza yusuf, and a couple other tapes and stuff.
It was my first time hearing Dr. Mattson speak and I was impressed by her poise and words that resonated deep Mashaallah.
Sh. Hamza Yusuf, Imam Zaid Shakir, Siraj Wahaj, Dr. Mokhtar etc were all awesome Mashaalllah:)
I also got to meet Dawud Wharnsby Ali  ;D He is the only one i managed to see without an entourage in the bazaar:) My little sis was excited:) although she was like "I thought he was gonna be younger!" :)
anywayz, that's my two cents...the location was awesome of course, being close to where i live and stuff:)
And yes, there was an FBI booth! those jerks  :P

I bought the books from here, because they had the lowest prices I could find on the internet (probably cheaper then ISNA prices. ;)  ).  Even though Commanding Good and Forbidding the Evil is a small book, its excellent.
http://www.onlineislamicstore.com/

Uthmaan, the Devil's Deception translated by Dr. Phillips is not a tranlsation of the whole book, but only a portion of it.  Unfortunately I don't know of a complete translation out there, and its really unfortunate, because there are some good things in that book.

I have Ibn Tamaiyyah's Letters from Prison in email, someone scanned the whole  book on this list that I was on, I can send it to you if you want.

I also have Difference of Opinion among the scholars, its not as big as I thought it should be, its fairly general in the material discussed in it.

The Hudud looked interesting, and I had wanted to get it for some time but its a little pricey and I'm not sure if it would be worth it, or if there is something better.  Let us know how it is.

yeah bro i know its not a complete translation of Tablees Iblis. i hope there would be one in the near future.

oh yes pls do send Ibn Tamaiyyah's Letters from Prison.

true, the book on Hudud would cost me over a hundred sing, im gonna ask my sister to get it for me, so at least ill save on the shipping costs ;)

do you have "Shariah:The Islamic Law" by Abdur Rahman I Doi? thats a good book too, and perhaps closest to this topic . ..

i would like to get Religious Extremism by Dr. Abdul Rahmaan ibn Mualaa
[(Translator/Compiler) : Jamaal al-Din M.Zarabozo] too but i dont know if its what i wanna read, i may just get it . . . . if you have read it, do tell us how it is.

Salaams,
Isna this year for me was sooooooooo strange since it was in my backyard.  I am so use to driving hours upon hours to reach it, and combining my salah, neither of which I could do this time.  So it was an adjustment.   This was my first time volunteering for "ISNA" normally I am working for myna or something, I was holding it down with Nazia and Zubaid in Media Relations.   It was a good experience, even thought I was scared out of my life after our training, ask nazia about that.  This year our group wasn't performing in the bazaar so that was kinda strange.  And also I had not one baby, but 2 babies at isna.  Life changes with kids, the isna experience is way different now.  You don't go to as many lectures, and you don't hang out nearly as late.  Things were sorta spread out this year which makes sense but groups like myna need the synergy of have all the lectures near by in order to draw huge crowds.  I think they said the numbers where about the same as last year, it just felt different because the hallways were smaller so you didn't see masses of people until everyone was out on the street.  Every year at isna I look for the HOT HOT Product in the bazaar.  2 years ago it was the Marshmellow treats sold by astrolabe, last year it was the art work by Reem of dreemart.com.  This year it's a tie for me, The prophets hands CD by DW-ALI and the kufis sold by the brother of the indonesian group Contrunada.  But this is only my opinion.  I didn't get to see many of my friends do to juggling between watching babies and watching news reporters.  But I am glad all seem to enjoy it.  One last thing, I was happy that ISNA VP Dr Mattson address the "Lobby Scene" at ISNA.  It was a real chump move to dissassociate your selves with the kids in the lobby.  Half the people who were cheering and all when that was said last year, probably didn't know their kids were the ones he was talking about.  But to end on a brighter note, next year I am gonna try to work on the islamic art presentations.  It was great having the addition of the Film Festival, but it should be added on the arts presenation that was sooooo awesome last year

First off, great to be back. Three weeks seemed a very long time to me. ;)

Anyways, I had done everything to  attend ISNA's convention but just  as last year something or the other just pulls me back. I hope next year would be my lucky year. But I did watch about half of the convention live on ISNA's website. Would have watched the whole thing live but it was impossible to get a connection. Those of you who tried know what I'm talking about.

And the lobby thing you and some speakers were talking about, what is that all about?? What lobby? what children? couldn't make any sense out of it.

Speakers were great, and there were so many. Haven't had the chance to watch the whole thing but inshallah soon.

Again, its great to be back and love the new membermap and gender thing. Oh and it took me a while to figure out what those arabic words meant for gender. I could make out the word sis, but bro looks nothing like the word bro. Personally, I liked the gender signs you had earlier.

Lucky you, you had another ISNA , if only you knew how blessed you are to have such type of events ,  you'll only know the value of it once you don't have it.
Please does anyone knows the link where one could watch the ISNA lectures. Jazak'Allah khayr
