"practicing" hijab

Well, so I first decided that I am not yet ready to hijab quite yet, since I took Shahada 8/31/02...I have been dressing more modestly even though its so hot over here... but anyhow,  I was curious about the hijab and how it would make me feel. So I decided to try it out slowly, by wearing one during my drive to and from work one day... it felt wierd to me the first day.  Then last evening, I decided to wear it in rush hour traffic on the way to meet a friend...it was pure daylight and boy my heart was pounding!! I was so nervous... I got a few looks here and there at the beginning and then it felt like everyone was staring at me!! My heart was beating hard the whole drive there.

I met a Muslimah through that friend later that evening and we decided to go have coffee and she wears hijab--well, man did we, well no, she got so many stares!!  She was confronting them with words like " Excuse me miss, but I am just like everyone else here, so you better stop staring at me!" and like "Your staring is getting on my nerves!!"  Although, I did not feel that was a graceful approach to confront what was annoying her, I felt sorry for her.  And yet at the same time I somehow felt that I wished I was wearing hijab with her also...does that make any sense?

Well, today I wore hijab again driving home from work and this time I got out of the car to get gas... I did not feel to bad at all... a few people stared but I was not bothered...

Dear Ameera, congratulations on taking your shehadah, sister!

My suggestion is to keep working on wearing the hijab.  It feels strange when you are not accustomed to it, but after you acquire the habit, you will feel funny without it!  Least ways, that was my experience.

May Allah subhana wa ta'ala reward you for your efforts.  :-*

Well done for trying your best sister. It always feels difficult at first and you will feel that everybody is staring at you. In time this will fade away as you get more & more used to it. Eventually you will think 'What was I worried about?!'

This is a test from Allaah & its not always an easy one. You must feel privileged that Allaah has shown you the right way masha'Allah. Insha'Allah may The Almighty make things easy for you.

I'll remember you in my prayers Insha'Allah.

I agree with the others. It will take a bit of time to get used to it, but with steadfastness and lots of duas, insha allah you will become accustomed to wearing hijab. In time you will even stop noticing the stares and comments which people make.Since I am not American I dont really know the reactions of the general public there but here in South Africa even though we are only +-1 million Muslims, people are very tolerant towards the hijab.Alhamdulilla I also wear the niqab and although initially because very few women were wearing it, it was an issue ,now because more and more women are wearing the niqab it has become accepted.I wonder what it would be like to visit America wearing niqab?Would I be harassed ?
May Allah make it easy on us all to practise the Deen.Ameen! [wlm] :-)

I came to America 7 months ago and I wear the niqab as well....I get all sorts of reactions from people  ;D......esp. the kids  :-/.........there are'nt many muslims where I live and none who wear the niqab.......
some of the reactions that I've got (from the kids..the adults are more discreet  :P) are.....

1)What is that !!!!!!!
2)Why is that lady wearing black??
3) :o

But the sweetest encounter I've had has been with a 4 year old who told me she really liked my dress  :-X
