Youth Work - Where? |

[slm] Everyone has some contact with the usual 'problems of youth' in this society (drugs, sex, alcohol etc) During the past year I've had more than I bargained for...and it's made me restless to do something about it in the wider community. I've worked with young children and with the elderly in a Muslim environment, but youth...that's a different matter. There are several opportunities for youth work in non-Muslim organisations, but I can't seem to find any Muslim ones. Does anyone know how I might go about finding work of this nature in the Muslim community? (Voluntary or paid - doesnt matter. To put it cheesily, I just want to help ;D) [wlm] |

[wlm] Here in the US youth work is a very new concept and not as developed as it might be in the UK or other places. Our communities neglect the youth and we can see the repercussions of this when people attend ISNA and other things. So you may find it very difficult to find something that you can join and work with. My suggestion to you is to develop your own plan or ideas with some friends and try to help the youth in your community, if you can't join a MYNA group or MSA. I really don't see the youth being helped by their parents or elders in the community. I think that's been done for 20 years here and only with marginal trickling success. I may be wrong but I feel now that the only way we have a future is if youth step up to help other youth, because only they know how to reach them. |
