an Imam's behavior...

So, I took Shahada on August 31st of 2002... and there is a man at work who is an Imam.  Well, I just told him the other day that I took Shahada since I had not seen him in a long time.  He was very excited and he Hugged me....  Now, I am very used to hugging male friends growing up in the U.S. but after studying Islam for so long now and knowing some of the rules between men and womens' relations... I am confused.
Should I just ignore it and if he tries again then confront him? Or should I confront him the next time I see him?  I am surprised that I feel its wierd he hugged me... probably from reading the Qur'an and stuff but...  hmmm.

slm,

that is really weird esp from an "imam".  hmm really weird..

just avoid him completely next time if he tries to invade your personal space and give him THE LOOK if he tries to come near you..

it happens sometimes on meeting a muslim bro he'll stick out his hand and if you just kind of look at them funny (after all they should know better!) they'll get the idea....

That is not at all the normal behaviour of muslim males and esp. of an imam :o........just stay away from him.......I think he must have thought he could get away with it since you being a new muslim might not know about the general rules of muslim conduct.......
He's an imam and has more of a responsibility to conduct himself properly, since he sort of set's an example for other people.....
I was so sorry to hear this.... :(
Excuse me if I sound too harsh but I'm extremely sensitive to the issue of non-mahram men touching me....... >:(

I'm not sure as to the reason for your discomfort in this matter.  Seems the brother was welcoming you into the fold of Islam.  Why make something out if is that doesn't seem to be there?  I've seen many brothers greet each other with a hug when meeting.  Has this brother displayed some sort of behavoir that leads you to believe that this greeting was anything more than it was?

As I recall, when the Prophet {PBUH} was asked by the angel Gabriel to "read"  for the 3rd time, and the Prophet replied "but I cannot read", the angel hugged him.

I maybe wrong in this and if I am, I welcome correction, but this seemed nothing more than a harmless greeting.

The point is that the Imaam is a male while Ameeraana is obviously female. For men to hug men, and women to hug women is totally acceptable, but the behaviour of this Imaam was not correct since his body would have come into close contact with Ameeraana's.And Allah knows best. [wlm] :-)
