[slm] Last night, I went into my kitchen to get some water and when I opened the fridge , I saw half an avocado sitting on a shelf. Avocado is a rare sight in my house hold and I asked my husband why he bought it.He replied that he had never tasted an avocado before and a collegue at work often slices it up very nicely at lunch time and he was curious. Since we both found it rather bland :P, I was wondering if anyone has other ways to cook it which would be appetizing to our desi taste buds. ;) Take care, Bushra :-) |

Assalaamu alaikum, Hmm, you want to cook avocado?! Or maybe you are talking about something else? Bland? No! To me avocado is a fruit (aka amrood), and it is my favoriate. Nothing beats a fresh and sweet amrood! Wasalaam. |

[slm] lol nooooooo!!!! An Avocado is NOT an Amrood. An Amrood is a Guava in English. And yes Guavas (especially in Pakistan) are yummy. Now back to the whole avocado thingie.....For starters, I know that the avocados we get here in good ol' CanaDUH are rather bland, but not all are. I lived in Western Africa for a year, and man! Them fruits be real goo-ood! Anyway, I think for your purposes, the best thing for you to do would be to try this fruit in your salads. Now, I am very passionate about my salads, so bear with my graphic illustrations: Take Romain lettuce, tomatos, carrots, cucumbers (whatever!), and then cut in an avocado (do this one last, there's an amount of satisfaction in this act :) ). To cut an avocado, cut it length-wise, so that you are making a cut along the root-hold. Don't cut through the seed, and then pull the two sides apart by twisting it. Don't peel the fruit, it gets messy. To get rid of the seed, take a big knife, whack it in the middle of the seed, and the twist the big knife so that the seed comes out while remaining attached to the knife. (Get it?) Next, if the fruit is perfectly ripe, you will be able to easily make squares in the flesh with your knife, while the peel is still on. you can then scoop these squares out with a spoon. (The square is a wonderfully stable shape...I would get started on my passion for squares and triangles, but I guess I digress :) ) Now try a simple olive oil/balsamic vinegar dressing. (Equal parts of each, salt, pepper, and some oregano.) I promise you this stuff is good. Let me know what you think. Wasalaam SF. |

[color=Teal] [slm] Here's how we eat avocado: Take a slice of bread: Syrian bread, rye bread or whatever floats your boat. Layer it with: avocado turkey slice (optional) tomatoes red onion slices sour cream and Cheese Heat it in the toaster oven until the cheese melts. Delicious :-* [wlm] Marcie[/color] |

Assalaamu alaikum, Intresting, so what exactly is avocado? I always thought avocado = guava fruit = amrood... BTW, I developed my taste for guava fruit in west africa as well where we picked up the fruit right off the trees, the ultimate in freshness. And I missed amrood badly while I was in the U.S. :) This is what m-w.com says for avocado: 1 : a pulpy green to purple nutty-flavored edible fruit of any of various tropical American trees (genus Persea especially P. americana) of the laurel family; also : a tree bearing avocados and for guava: 1 : any of several tropical American shrubs or small trees (genus Psidium) of the myrtle family; especially : a shrubby tree (P. guajava) widely cultivated for its sweet acid yellow or pink fruit 2 : the globose to pear-shaped fruit of a guava You can always make fruit salad with amroods (avocado?). Just mix different fruit pieces and add sugar, salt, pepper, any other seasoning. It tastes great. Wasalaam. |

[slm] mmm how about a cocktail of avocado basics: either Boiled shrimps, crab(canned),tuna(canned) white onions, chopped cucumber, tomatoes diced Vinaiger olive oil a touch of salt, pepper herbs (oregano, thym, romarin(rosemary not sure),taraggon a bouquet of fresh dil or Parsley chopped. chives a sprig shred shrimps or crab/tuna. make a vinaigrette (vinaigre&oil,a pinch of salt, pepper, garlic if desired),mix well then add the herbs. mix the vegies. cut your avocado in equal half, remove the hard middle part, dont peel them. in a bowl mix your shrimps, vegies, and some herbs. pour the vinaigrette on top of your mix, sprinkle with parsley. and let it cool in the fridge for an hour or so. get some baguette(french bread), either have it natural or do some garlic bread In Africa, especially the great lakes regions,Avocados are really big, i mean as big as 2-3 big pears, i mean you eat 1 and your are really full. Bon appetit Mesdames et Messieurs ;-) |
