I was confronted by a non-Muslim with this he calls a fact: Al-Hadis, Vol. 3, p. 137) Abu Sayeed al-Khodri reported that Mohammed was talking to a group of women when he said, "... I see the majority of you will go to Hell." The women asked why, to which Mohammed responded, "You often curse and are ungrateful to your companions." He then told them they had a basic defect in their nature, to which they responded, "How?" Mohammed answered, "Is not the attestation (knowledge and witness) of a women only worth half of a man's? And that is on account of her short intelligence." This quote really brings out Mohammed's "shining" views on women. He automatically condemns the majority of them to hell. According to him a woman's intellectual capacity is only half that of a man and that is why two women are required as witnesses as compared to one man. He was so scared of women's intelligence that he said, "a man should not walk between two women" (Al Hadis, Vol. 1, p. 586) as that would mean that the man was taking a risk of being on equal turf according to Mohammed. |

oops, sorry, I accidentally hit enter. Anyways, could anyone please tell me if this is a true story/hadith...I am not sure what the Al-Hadis is... How do I explain this to anyone who confronts me with this and argues that Prophet Mohammed (PBUH) bashed women. Toshiko |

as salaamu alaykum wa rahmatAllah, Ameerana I don't know who this person is that you're talking to, but, to be blunt, tell them to read at least *one* actual book about Islam before making such sweeping, completely *incorrect* accusations about the faith, it's teachings, and the Prophet Muhammad [saw], and taking one (incomplete, btw) narration out of context. People who make statements like this get me really mad.. first and foremost for how they misrepresent Islam, and the teachings of our beloved Prophet Muhammad [saw] who HONORED women and elevated them as can be seen in many many of his traditions that speak about women and their status.. but also their *audacity* at assuming that the 500 million+ Muslim women in the world are stupid enough to follow a faith that regards them as inferior and second class. Wearing hijab doesn't cut off blood circulation to our brains :P Perhaps there's more to Islam and its teachings on women and their rights than what can be concluded from one text. This is a really excellent article you might want to read about the rights of women in Islam: http://www.jannah.org/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.pl/YaBB.pl?board=masjid&action=display&num=3874 |

as salaamu alaykum,
He was so scared of women's intelligence that he said, "a man should not walk between two women" (Al Hadis, Vol. 1, p. 586) as that would mean that the man was taking a risk of being on equal turf according to Mohammed.
This is what is called in colloquial american english "talking smack" ::) Where'd he get the idea that this prohibition has *anything* to do with a "a risk of equality"? Could we get some context? I'd like to see the full text of the narration. |

About seven or eight months ago I read an absolutely brilliant essay online about the "majority of dwellers in hell are women" and "deficiency in intelligence and religion" hadiths. I thought I had it bookmarked, and now I can't find it. :'( :'( :'( :'( The article gave a very thorough (I thought) discussion of the issues, dealing with such things as the translation into English, the possible or even probable scenario from which the quotes might have arisen, the cultural millue, etc. It was a terrific treatment and entirely cleared up any problems I was having with these hadiths. I would love to pass on the reference, but now I can't find it. :'( :'( :'( I know it's a long shot, but does anyone perhaps have a guess based on this brief description as to which essay this might be or where it might be found? Peace, Dawn |
