| [slm] [i]A Womanhood Defiled: Her blood curdling screams Pierced the skies As Mother earth wept her gushing blood A womanhood defiled Dignity reviled For pagan customs wrapped up In an Islamic disguise She lay broken A twelve year old Mutilated beyond repair Millions suffering in silent despair Tangled within menacing roots Of ignorance No strength No resistant voice to declare No vision beyond a disconsolate empty stare Diseases ravage her body Battling with excruciating menstruations Urinary tract infections Of her husband she is petrified Of childbirth horrified She battles this senselessness In the dark weeping shadows Of her mind, Captive of her only sin A womanhood reviled A twenty first century society Still wallowing in darkness The second onset of the era Of ignorance It is our duty to Awaken the slumbering conscience Spread the true teachings of His Highness To restore the pure dignity Of a girl's innocence And nurture the woman's Essence Into folds of eternal sacredness. -Maliha Balala [/i] [wlm] |

| [slm] Sorry Sis Original compared to some of the stuff I read about this topic, I didn't begin to scratch the surface in this poem. It is a really pervasive custom in a lot of third world countries especially. A lot of westerners view this as another of "Islam's patriarchial" practices. In truth Islam does not condone the level of mutilations many of the girls have to go through. It is really sad and in some cultures a girl is considered unmarriageable if she does not agree to submit to this lifelong torture. Anywayz, i felt compelled to say something about it and i found myself trying to "tone" it down a whole lot as I was writing this. Maliha :-) [wlm] |

| [slm] Oh I know...I wasn't being insulting. I have seen some horrific things happen to females (especially girls) during my experiences in Third World countries. Just a thought, have you guys heard about the rapings in southern Africa (especially South Africa)? There's a myth that if you have intercourse with a virgin that you can rid yourself of AIDS. And i guess, the disease being as it is, it is leading many people to take desperate measures. And babies (some 2 months old!) are being raped. :( SF. |

| [slm] Unfortunately this is still true Original. I work everyday with people who believe that having intercourse with a virgin will cure them of HIV. We have a major problem educating people about this myth. There was a very publisized case of a baby being gang-raped here. She is not the only one unfortunately. I spent this week at a child abuse centre, and am still trying to recover from the horror that I witnessed there. May Allah help us all... wasalam |

| [slm] I agree with all of you 100%.The baby rapes here in South Africa just seem to be getting worse day by day and the frightening thing is the ridiculous sentences these inhumane perpetrators are given.Ithink it is high time that the death penalty be brought back as a deterrent to any other sickos and that our rural communities be educated about this stupid myth.This subject really makes me angry and makes us even more paranoid about our kids so that we feel like we are living in a prison.Please make dua for our country that inshaallah these crimes are eradicated. :( :( [wlm] |
