Vanilla... oh no!!

Oh man, I was just reading through the archives and read Kathy's recipe for cheesecake which, by the way, sounds delicious, but, when reading the ingredients, I noticed she says to use imitation vanilla extract as it has no alcohol...  I didn't know!! I have been using vanilla this whole time.... I need to be more careful and find some websites that lists commonly used items that I may not know are not halal!!  I know I can probably find some sites with a search engine but if anyone knows of any good ones, please let me know!!   :) :)

One thing to remember, though: real vanilla tastes loads better than that imitation stuff!

Instead, you might try this: take one vanilla bean (available in the spice section of the grocery store) and put it into a closed glass jar with 1 pound of sugar. Let it sit for a week.  After one week, you have "vanilla sugar".  Use 1 tablespoon of vanilla sugar in place of 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract in recipes.

Also, vanilla sugar is extremely yummy in hot chocolate, coffee and in French toast batter.
