praying on bus

Assalammu'alaikum,

What is the procedure for praying if one is travelling on bus to another city (which takes about 12 hours to reach)?

Also, once you've arrived at the city, as a traveller, you're allowed to shorten the prayers right? Is that as in two prayers combined? Or can u shorten more than two prayers?

Confused.

Jazakallah.

If you can't delay the prayers until you reach your destination, and there are no road stops long enough for you to pray, then pray sitting in your seat, insha'Allah.

You can find some of the rules regarding this issue here: (cut and paste the link just as it is)

Okay!  Interesting that this has been brought up.  I have a question that is semi-related, and perhaps some of you could provide me with an answer.  My brother-in-law prays while driving his car on the road.  My sister finds it very annoying, because he ALWAYS has to leave the house/work 5 minutes before Maghrib, and instead of sticking around until after the prayers, he literally prays on his steering wheel.  When I saw him doing this, I seriously thought he was joking around, and I started laughing.  It wasn't until he finished his prayers that he told me I was distracting him ??? ???

He quotes the time that the Prophet (saw) prayed while sitting on his camel.  He prays while waiting in a queue, on a dinner table, in his meetings, etc etc.  Just seems wrong to me, but I have no clue what to say to him.

Wasalaam.

Salam alaikum sis,
I've been trying to look this up, but cant find anything. Is he doing his sunnah's like this or all his prayers? Is he praying and driving at the same time? :o (sounds dangerous ;) ) Also, is there a need for him to do this or is he able to pray normal? InshaAllah I'll find something. :)
He quotes the time that the Prophet (saw) prayed while sitting on his camel.
I know this was when the Prophet(saw) traveled. He did this for his nawaful, but not for the fard. For the fard salat he would get down and pray.  Allahu Alim.

[slm],

Some of the sheikhs I have heard have said that you cannot pray in your car like that. I know one of the companions prayed while walking once and the Prophet approved it, but it was in a situation of great danger to his life from the unbelievers. So the sunnah is to pray the way Prophet prayed normally, if you are travelling you can pray 2 rakats, but again not in your car unless there is danger to your life otherwise.

Allahu Alam.
