What is the Iqra Program? The Iqra program is a tutoring program conducted by the Islamic Center of NYU working with local schools in the New York City area. The Iqra program was started in the fall 2000 semester by Sr. Brooke Schneider as part of the Islamic Center of NYU's community service initiative. It was continued in the spring 2001 semester, but placed on hold in the fall 2001 semester because of the recent tragedies. What is the objective of the Iqra Program? The Iqra program seeks to assist local Islamic schools by providing them help in tutoring and mentoring their students. Our goal is to best serve the educational needs of the schools we go to, so the subjects in which we tutor in is determined by the requests of the schools' administrators. Currently, the school that we work with has statewide and city testing in all four basic subjects* and thus needs help with all of these subjects (especially English at the high school level and social studies in middle school). When and where does the Iqra Program operate? We currently tutor at one school: Al-Noor, located on 675 4th Avenue in Brooklyn. Tutoring begins at 3 in the afternoon and can go until 5. This means that Iqra tutors must be available to meet on the days that they tutor at the Islamic Center around 2:30. We leave together in groups of 2-5 and catch the subway to Al-Noor**. Insha'Allah, we will restart the program during the third week of September on the 16th. Any more questions? Please direct them to sistaJT@yahoo.com |
