Does anyone have any thoughts on this?

One of the brothers I go to with jumah, plays the tapes on the ride to the masjid.

Is your concern that it's a female reciting the Qur'an?  Because, I do think that it is kind of alarming.  Farhat Hashmi, though she can be kind of cool...has been a cause for controversy because she does certain things that are questionable.  Example: when leading an all women-jamat, she has been known to stand in front of the first saff.  To my understanding, that is not allowed in a female imaamat.  Perhaps the brother who listens to that tape, should not?  Wallahu Alam.

Wasalaam.

Subhan Allah!

Laa ilaha illaa Allah!

Another sincere worker for Islam, may Allah reward her plentifully, finds herself a victim of false propaganda and pointless controversy against her.

Farhat Hashmi has been the single most influential female Muslim individual of this generation in the Indo-Pak region.  She has been the means through which Allah (awj) has changed the lives of *many* sisters in Pakistan (as well as outside of Pakistan.  There are sisters residing in the US who have been affected by her).  I personally know at least 6 sisters who started praying regularly and covering themselves after attending Farhat Hashmi's classes.  These sisters come from modern households, from neighborhoods and families where religiosity is taboo.

At a time when the people of the subcontinent are faced with the biggest disease of all - ignorance about their Deen, at a time when they lack *any* motivation to learn their Deen let alone practice it as they should practice it, at a time when they are bombarded by the Western ideology and Indian movie culture, such a lady is an oasis in the desert.  I pray to Allah (awj) to give her a long life, to give her strength in her endeavors, to increase her in her ilm and her eloquence and in her ability to move people by her talks, demeanor and actions.  Ameen.

The audio clip contains another sister, not Sr. Farhat Hashmi, reciting the Qur'an.  Mind you, she is simply reciting the Qur'an without any tarteel.  She is not making her voice beautiful.  I do not know of any *scholar* who has ruled that the women should not recite the Qur'an plainly in the presence of men.  The only "scholars" who claim such a view are those who claim that the women's voice is aurah [to be concealed from strange men], and their opinon has no basis and has been convincingly refuted by *many* ulamaa, including Shaykh Qaradawi (may Allah preserve him) and others.

As far as her leading the salaah in front of the women, this is a strange piece of news and I do not know of anything like this.  And if she does perform something like this, then I first need to find out if this may actually be the belief of one of the legitimate schools of thought in Ahlus Sunnah wal-Jamaa'ah.  Sr. Farhat Hashmi has studied in the Middle East for quite some time, and has been greatly influenced by scholarship in S. Arabia and other countries.  I doubt she would be committing a mistake of this nature in a ritual like Salaah!

Wallahu ta'ala a'lam.

O you who have imaan, when a person brings you a piece of news, verify it before you spread it, lest you cause harm to come to your people because of your lack of knowledge and then later you regret your actions.

When we go to the masjid on jumah's we ride together in 1 car, so I hear the tape as well.  It was just a little odd for me, as I had not heard a woman before on tape/cd reciting the Quran.  But the thing is, that there was tafsir as well, and I am not aware of any other tapes/cds out there with tafsir (english ones).

I have heard of Dr. Farhat's endeavors in Pakistan and what tremendous success she has had over there with women wearing hijab and praying, alhumdullilah.  But I don't really know much about her, and that's why I was also enquiring about the material in the tape.  Who are Dr. Farhat's teachers?

assalaamu alaikum

I've only heard good things of her too. Again i don't know much about her educational background, but Sh. Suhaib's wife speaks highly of her.

You can hear her lectures in urdu at this site: http://www.alhudapk.com

Just so we get this straight...I do think Dr. Hashmi is super-cool, but anyone in her position is bound to be looked-upon with a critical eye.  And the only reason I mentioned her Imaamat is because I witnessed it first-hand.

Please let me know to confirm.

Asalamu alykum,

Alhamdullilah, I had an opportunity to attend a summer camp in Pakistan couple yrs ago at Al-huda, Islamabad. Although, Dr. Farhat ( May Allah(swt) Bless her) wasn't there all the time but our teachers were students of her, who had formally studied with her. It certainly was one of the most humbling experiences of my life and I can go on and on about the camp. But as bros mentioned that her work in Pakistan is extraordinary and the methods she is using to educate sisters in Pakistan are awesome. I spent a month and half there and whenever she led the prayers, she never stood infront of the first saf.
Masha'Allah one of her daughers is Hafiza  and we were blessed to have her as our tajweed teacher. She has the most beautiful recitation of the Qur'an. Dr Farhat's husband is also a teacher at an Islamic University in Islamabad, Masha'Allah the family is amazing and May Allah(swt) Bless them and increase the barakah in their lives.

I had an opportunity to attend a talk she gave when she was visiting our city, she's a truly amazing person, and has done alot of great work.

Incidently she was asked about the practice about women praying together in jamaat and she replied with her reasonings on why it was allowed and the etiquette in how it should be done, and she did say that the woman who was leading was to stand in the same line not in front of the others. After the talk, she led the maghrib prayer  and she did not stand in front of the others. I just thought I should share that...
